June 7 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Partly to mostly cloudy skies. Temperature 84F. Seeing is a bit above average. I observed on and off from 10:30am until about 4:00pm EDT local time ( US ) when a thunderstorm sent me in.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
One small bright curved prominence visible. Sunspots in AR12765 are easy to see. The plage itself is easy as well. A long double-filament is seen extending from it. An easy to see hedgerow filament is seen well to the southwest. The plage to AR12764 can be seen. I can see 4 filaments in it's vicinity, to the east and north of it.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge 50x and 125x ( WL )
I can see at least 8 spots and pores in the group contained in the facula of AR 12765. The primary spot shows radial symmetry within the penumbra. I also see two dark almost threadlike extensions of the umbra curving off to the south into the penumbra. I took about three images using my Nikon D3500 DSLR attached to the wedge using eyepiece projection. One turned out.

Thanks for the flipping advice Mark. Now my Nikon image is oriented correctly.

Thank you Eric. I seem to find that photographing in white light with a DSLR is a bit easier than photographing in Hydrogen Alpha. I have a really hard time getting disc detail on the Ha sun with a DSLR. Getting it in precise focus is even difficult.

Nice report, James.

DSLR's aren't all that great in the red end of the spectrum indeed, but those WL shots look excellent!

Thanks all of you. White light is certainly easier to do than Ha is with my Nikon DSLR. How did amateurs take Ha images before they had these high-speed webcams and stacking software? But again, few amateurs had Ha equipment in those days, it was so expensive. And it was not really that long ago. 2000 and before.
