Sunspot region AR 2765 today from New Zealand

Post by c8er »

First solar ha light for my APM 140/980 refractor. Poor seeing with quite a stiff breeze.

Daystar Quark Chromosphere and ZWO ASI174MM camera with a Rowan Astronomy camera tilter between the two, all on a 10Micron GM1000 HPS mount. I'm not really satisfied with this image, but the seeing was poor and there was quite a breeze, and I suspect I also might not have had the Quark at the optimum tuning.

However, it's just very nice to have some sunspots back, and that happening just after I got a good sized refractor for the first time is a real bonus.

Cheers,
Chris M

Hi Chris,

That is a very nice first light. My HA first light was so bad that I didn't show it to anyone.

So well done and keep your images coming.

Alfred

Well done Chris, that's a cracking first image :bow :hamster: we show our images because we are proud of them and so you should be, we can also learn lots to improve too.

I would say you were in the red or blue wing (not centre-line). What you can see is all those fantastic white spots, these are Ellerman bombs and they are most prominent in the red and blue wings. If you kept taking images every 10 minutes you will notice that some spots come and go, these are the Ellerman bombs. Ones that stay put are arch filament foot points instead. This is a super image!
I would try changing the tuning dial on the Quark, wait for it to warm up and take another identical image. It will take about 2hrs in total to go through all the dial settings and then you will be able to find out where centre line is. It is well worth the effort.

Good first light with the APM, like has been said already you just need to find the optimum tuning position for the Quark.

Congratulations on an excellent first light, Chris.

Once you get the details figured out (optimal tuning for the Quark etc), you'll have a quite a nice imaging setup there I reckon.
