June 11 2020 Observations
Today I observed from 11:00am to 1:00pm EDT local time ( US ). Temp 75F and seeing is a bit above average. Mostly clear skies.
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS 32x, 44.5x, 64x, 89x ( Ha )
Very nice views today. AR12764 is on the NW receding limb and one has to look closely to see the plage associated with it and two vague filaments. AR12765 is easy with it's plage being an easy find. The embedded sunspot is easy as are two filaments. A short one NW of the spot and a much darker one SE of it. The nice filament that has been crossing the far south reaches of the sun is now reaching the limb and has became a nice filaprom. It's prominence part splits in two branches! I see only one other brighter prominence and that is on the NE approaching limb. I see several other tiny ones. All in DS configuration. I can see the spicule layer also upon a closer limb-look. Also today, like I mentioned in a post a few days ago I noticed a darker spot on the sun that was not a sunspot or nothing associated with an active region. No filament shows on a GONG image at that location. I think it may just be a " dark mottle ". We are all familiar with the mottling of the chromosphere caused by the uneven distribution of spicules across the sun. Maybe these occasional darker places I see are just dense spicule clusters? I just know I occasionally pick up small darker areas not shown on GONG. I am reaching here...
Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge 21.5x and 54x. ( WL )
Only one spot seen in AR12765. At 54x the umbra is seen to be heart-shaped. The spot still sports a nice penumbra. No pores seen and I cannot see any evidence of the AR facula at all. Granulation is easily seen.
Today may be the last day I use the SMII90 for a couple of weeks, unless I get to use it tomorrow or over the weekend. I am going on vacation to Key West Florida starting a week from Friday and I am taking it and the AT72EDII to a friend in Rock Hill SC for safe-keeping while I am gone. BUT I am taking the more portable SMII60 with me to the Keys. It's small enough to be airline-portable. The resort we are staying at has a small refractor, looks like an Orion 60mm that I can use projection on to get a white-light reading. So even on vacation I can still observe the sun. Barring clouds of course!

Re: June 11 2020 Observations
Jochen,
After posting this I found out my elderly father is not feeling well and I may need to take him to the doctor and make sure he's gonna be ok. My daughter has gotten sick too. None are COVID-19 related. This might not resolve fast enough to allow me to go. I'll see. Regardless my solar observations will go on. Tropical Key West would have been nice. My wife and her daughter are still going.

Sorry to hear that, James; that’s unfortunate.
I hope they both make a swift recovery.

Re: June 11 2020 Observations
A beautifully descriptive report James, I imagine that you would see more than on the GONG images with your DS 90mm
I hope the recovery is quick so that you can go on your holidays, it is always good to have a break. I am glad to hear that Florida is open for tourists again, I should have been there in March but it was sadly not to be.

Re: June 11 2020 Observations
Florida only opened the Keys up on June 1st for tourists. I bet a lot of businesses there are still limited. It still would have been nice to sit next to the ocean and drink a beer. My wife and her daughter are still going. I am lending her my Nikon.Montana wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 7:29 am A beautifully descriptive report James, I imagine that you would see more than on the GONG images with your DS 90mm

Hi James,
Nice image of your setup. I can see you are also well prepared to stay hydrated. What is drink is that green bottle?

Re: June 11 2020 Observations
Thanks Eric. I do need to get a good mount capable of solar tracking when I get seriously into imaging. The Losmandy AZ8 Altazimuth mount is adequate for visual use.

Stu,
I am not going to be able to go. My dad is having medical issues and I need to tend to him. I guess it's beer and solar closer to home.
