AR2765 goes away
Images were captured on Sunday morning, 2020_06_14
I went out before dawn to watch the seeing change as the morning progressed. The area was sitting in the middle of a high pressure cell with clear skies and calm winds. The morning was cool, about 7 C (45 F). Chances for good seeing were promising. I gathered up the gear and moved out to a spot near where I live, marked Peninsula View on the map. Sunrise was at an azimuth of 55 degrees, shown by the white arrow. Unlike my back yard (approximately between the "a" and "v" of Traverse City), the Peninsula View gives me a clear shot across open water and forest. Elevation of the overlook is about 80 m (260 ft) above the water.
Seeing started to improve about 2 hours after dawn. It was never fantastic, but was definitely better than what I'm used to in my back yard. The images aren't terribly exciting because there's not much to see but our little AR2765 about to disappear over the horizon. What is notable though, is that I was able to maintain some degree of detail almost all the way to the limb. Normally this region degenerates into mush in my images.
Moving to the Peninsula View location definitely improved my results. I'm sure it will be worth the effort again when we have something to see. I did not have my SSM plugged in because the USB on my computer is a bit touchy and I have only one port, but it would be nice to have a quantitative measure of the seeing difference.

Re: AR2765 goes away
Came out well. Location is key for seeing. You can use the SSM without a PC - just plug in a usb power supply (battery) and take the readings straight off the unit.

Hi Bruce,
Good to hear that you have found a great location for. imaging. That shot near the limb looks great.

Re: AR2765 goes away
Beautiful!! the limb detail is indeed excellent, I would say it is definitely worth the effort if another big AR comes along but stick to home viewing the rest of the time. It is better to view more often in imperfect seeing rather than rarely at good seeing

Re: AR2765 goes away
Thanks all. I appreciate the kudos. I will definitely repeat this the next time we have a good active region and I have good weather.
Mark - I didn't think about that. My mind was stuck in thinking about the SSM log file and I never considered just writing the numbers down. Duh!
I'm currently trying to scrounge around on Cloudy Nights for info on tripods and portable piers. My tripod is neither easy to move nor easy to adjust to level. In my back yard, I have to do three different setups throughout the day because my viewing aperture is so limited. So, whether I work at home or take the gear on the road, moving and setup are a big part of the operation for me. I'm trying to capture a nice prom as I type this, but I can't leave the computer tracking for more than about 5 minutes before I have to correct it again. I just can't seem to get a solid setup, and every time I move, it's off in a different way. I guess the bright side is that the tracking error minimizes Newton's rings.
