June 18 2020 observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today I am observing from my dad’s house near Lowndesville SC. The temp is 70F and I observed between 10:00am and 10:30am EDT local time ( US ). Seeing seems to be pretty good. The sky is mostly cloudy and the sun is observed through high clouds impairing the view a bit.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
One really nice prominence visible on the SW limb. Bright and easy to see. I see it in three bright sections close together. I see another smaller prom on the NE limb. I see two filaments on the north-central disc and three other small ones on the NE disc inwards of the smaller prom. I see no plages. Spicule mottling seen across disc.

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge. 21.5x. ( WL )
Featureless disc. I can see no faculae or spots.

He is doing some better. I have taken him around to get food and supplies and found him a doctor. My wife leaves for Key West today without me. 🙁

Hi James,

The Sun may not have much to show on this day, but again it will surprise us.

Your Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS must be very portable for you to bring it to your dad's place. What mount did you used for this observation?

Alfred

The SMII 60 is very portable. I could even carry it on board an airplane if need be. I am using the lightweight Coronado AZS altazimuth mount with it. It is simple but works fine for visual use.

The SMII 90 is much bigger and heavier and takes a sturdy mount/tripod to hold. It can still be transported but with greater difficulty. It is certainly not grab and go like the 60 is.

James
