Solar prom animation from 06-26-20

Post by AJamesB »

Following a few tutorials, including one by chuckastro (his reddit handle, not sure of his actual name) I'm trying to put it all together and learn solar animations.

2 things still elude me, the first being good (or even decent) seeing, and the 2nd is how to get GIF's small enough as other members do and then find a place to host them that doesn't destroy the image quality. So until I learn that last one youtube will have to do. Always more to learn!

Newton rings become much more appparent in the animation than they are in still images, so I finally broke down and have a tilt adapter on the way as well.

This is about an hour's time, using 15 second videos taken with 15 seconds between each.

I tried seeing that prom visually in my SMII60 today but never could get it. It showed up faintly on GONG so I knew it might be difficult. But you got it so well! And just look at all that burning spicule movement on the disc and on the limb. That's outstanding!!

Nicely done. Lots going on at the limb.

I use Flickr to host my images, including animations (as does Alexandra and Mark and others).

That's a beautiful animation well done :hamster: :movie

The only problem with MP4 and Youtube is we can't get them up as SPOD :( if you follow Stuart's excellent tutorial you can make a gif in GIMP (freeware) and then host on Flickr. We can show you how to link from Flickr later :)

Okay, so I did another one today, got it smaller and in GIF form, and I've created a flickr account and uploaded it. What is the best way to get it into a post? I am in need of your great knowledge! :bow

OK

First click on this button (red arrow)
Flickr 01.jpg
Flickr 01.jpg (447.8 KiB) Viewed 760 times
Then click on these arrow - pick 'original' click on the 'BBcode tab' copy and paste the link in the text into your comment box
Flickr 02.PNG
Flickr 02.PNG (187.7 KiB) Viewed 760 times
Then when you post the gif will be running ( if you have it on continual loop when you recorded the gif)

Oh yes and when you go into your settings on Flickr make sure you have it set that anyone can download and share your images :) or I can't access the above tab to copy the Live.static link for SPODs :)

Ah, sweet, thanks! So, I think I got it working, though now I realize I need to get my gifs even smaller as it's taking a while to play it, lol. Wish there was some way to be able to use mp4 vids, since the original mp4 was 1/4th the size of the resulting gif, even after downsizing the resolution and color data substantially when making the final gif. So loss of resolution and color data for a much larger file, lol.

I know that the cloudynights forum has a 'youtube' button that links and embeds youtube videos, I wonder if they could implement something like that here.

Anywho, thanks all for the pointers and help! I'll keep practicing and fine tuning the process so that once we get out of solar minimum hopefully I'll have it down!
