July 2 2020 Lots of filaments!!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

All,
Today I observed from about 11:00am to 11:30 am EDT local time ( US ). I have partly cloudy skies and seeing is poor today. The temperature is 80F.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 66.5x ( Ha )
Despite the soft seeing detail was decent though the 12 power 66x eyepiece was a bit beyond the seeing limits. I had to stay pretty low today. First off I see seven easy filaments in the northeast quadrant of the Sun. They terminate on two small prominences on the NE limb. The northwest quadrant shows a single small but easy filament and a large detailed prominence on the limb. To me it looks like a chair with a footstool! Though brighter is SS, DS actually shows up the seeing less and even though it's dim it shows detail quite well showing threads of plasma within it. The southwest quadrant shows a row of tiny proms on the limb. The southeast quad is pretty spectacular showing a row of prominences ( hedgerow prom ) with a ripplelike plage just inward of them. Inward still a smaller but brighter plage is easily seen. A diffuse filament is also seen to the south of the brighter plage. I can see more detail within the small bright plage than GONG shows. I can see a few other tiny proms around the disc as well. The spicule mottles cover the disc. I see a total of 9 filaments today!

Celestron NextStar 102GT w/Altair wedge. 50x and 100x ( WL )
Two faculae visible. Both correspond to the plages seen in Ha. The larger SE one is fairly large and ripple-like. The second is dimmer ( unlike in Ha ) and contains an easy to see dark pore! Granulation is visible with difficulty.

James

Filaments are good, they're an indication of cycle 25 magnetism increasing.

A sure sign of the beginning of a new cycle and the waning down of solar minimum. 👍🏻
