Almost full disk WL July 28, 2020

Post by dhkaiser »

Here is my first effort from this morning, have not looked at the other files. As you can see I am unable to get the FD with my Lunt 102 and ASI 178. Any suggestions on a focal reducer that would mount on this system?

Nice shots, very crisp.

To bring the solar disc within the small sensor of my CCD I make use of that small reducers that have the same thread of eyepiece filters, just put them on the camera nose. They came basically in two versions both labeled as 0.5x, this the weaker
red1.jpg

and this is the stronger
red2.jpg
red2.jpg (12.5 KiB) Viewed 1165 times
The actual reducing factor depends on the distance from the sensor, therefore I purchased a set of C-spacers in order to change the reducing factor based on the focal length of the scope

Reducing the effective f.l. requires refocusing inward therefore there shall be enough backfocus that can be eat by the reducer.

Hope it helps

Hi Dan,

Why not make a 2 image Mosaic ? That is easy with white light and you do not loose resolution.

Something to consider, what software?

Hi Dan,

Any image processing software. What software packages do you have ?

You can even manually join them to a full disc. There is no big science behind that.

I use Photoshop 2020, I know it sounds expensive, but I have it since more then 20 years and now I have a monthly subscription for US $ 9.95 per month.

In Photoshop you just paste the second image over the first. There is a function " Difference " for overlaying and so you see where the overlaid image fits on the lower one and if there is a function Blend Layers you got it.

Excellent WL images, Dan.

Microsoft’s ICE image stitching software works well.... and it’s free.

Nice images Dan. I'd recommend the mosaic over a reducer. Use ICE like Stu suggests if there's not something in elements that does it.

Thank you Stu and Mark. Elements does have a merge option however it seems not to work on my solar images. I will look at Microsoft’s ICE image stitching software. Thanks again.

Hi Dan

I use a focal reducer which has C mount which gets it closer to the chip. I forget where it came from but I attach a photo. It works exactly for my CCD (PGR Ch3) with an ED80 for FD in WL and CaK. I prefer the loss of detail to the very faint slight edges you get usually using mosaics. It is less effort too. I have used Microsoft ICE and it is extremely good too.

Good luck
Robert

Thanks Robert. I have ordered a .5 reducer and downloaded ICE. Will experiment with both.

Looks good, Dan.

Regarding the mosaic; all of the suggested solutions should work fine (ICE, merge function in PS/Elements,...). Just make sure you have enough overlap in your separate images. Judging by your fov; I would opt for 3 panels (top to bottom) to play it safe.

Dan:
Very nice images.
As for getting the FD on the chip, first I use a chuck connected to the 0.5X reducer so to find the proper distance to the chip of the camera, so by moving the extension in steps in the chuck, you can get the diameter of the solar disc you need, by just looking at the PC monitor.
After I find the proper distance, then I make an extension of the proper length and leave it on the camera.
The photo shows the chuck and the extension in my ZWO camera.
Best regards,
Eric.
