Sun part 2 Friday 31st July WL & CaK

Post by Montana »

I have now processed my WL and CaK both taken with TEC140 (with CaK stopped to 100mm). Camera ASI174 and 5x powermate for the close ups. They do look best if clicked through to Flickr and click the magnifier. I actually managed to spot the large prom in CaK first which was a surprise, I could see a large rectangular pixel of paler light in the camera (my superb new computer monitor). After processing I could see it as a prom. On my new monitor I have huge concentric rings of grey in this image but on my computer here at work it looks mostly fine, so hopefully you see this version and not huge blocks of grey. It does make solar processing a shot in the dark (and capture!).

and I am very happy to say that thanks to Alfred I think the TeleVue 2.5x Powermate is solved. I unscrewed the black part off my Celestron 2x Barlow and sellotaped it to the top of the Powermate (about 4cm extra size) and tried it on the C11 + CaK wedge - no central spot. The seeing was hideous so I couldn't make out features or clarity but the reflection seems to be gone. Thanks Alfred :bow2 I need a permanent fix now.

Lovely images, ooodles of detail in the CaK closeups.

Have you tried different display settings with your new monitor? The posterisation sounds like it's running on fewer bits than it should be... Do you have a new PC and running a secondary 4k monitor?

Thanks everyone :)

Mark, it is a Dell Precision 17 inch laptop with 4 K screen. It cannot display black at all even in video or photograph, it condenses it to solid blocks of greys. In full colour it is wonderful, for black it is hideous. I see no way round the problem. Trying to capture a prominence is like looking at one straight block of featureless grey.

Have you tried running the display in FHD (1920x1200) opposed to UHD (4K)?

Lovely images, Alexandra. Nice details and wonderful capture of that huge prom in CaK. :)

As Mark suggests, there be an optimal configuration setting for your monitor. It’ll probably be trying to display millions of shades of grey when there are fewer available depending on the bit depth. There will be a suitable adjustment to the number of displayed ‘colours’ under settings.

Thanks guys :)

Mark, we tried that last night and it made it 10x worse  we will have to see if the Xrite i1Pro helps matters at all (they just need to send it, still waiting).

All your images are great. I especially like the CAK close-ups, its fluffy texture.

Glad to hear that you have removed the reflected light spot on C11 image. I look forward to seeing great CAK shots with x2.5PM soon!!

Wow, Alexandra, I didn't realized that 100mm in Ca outputs such details
Very impressed.

100mm in Cak is equivalent resolution to 160mm in Ha.

Have you tried updating the drivers for the graphics card?
