August 17 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

I am back home in Edneyville NC today. For today's session I observed from 10:55am to noon EDT local time ( US ). Skies are partly cloudy with temps in the upper 70sF. Seeing is certainly below average.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see three active regions today. The only numbered one is AR12771 and it is the hardest to see of the three visible. North of it I see another AR plage with a noticeable gap within the plage. I cannot tell whether it is an actual gap or a filament. To it's SW lies another plage. I cannot see a filament within it. GONG shows a thin one but poor seeing may be keeping me from spotting it. The only filament I can see on the disc is a small dark one that is north of the SE plage. I can see three prominence areas on the disc. The SE shows two with the northernmost one resembling a thunderhead with a top trailing northward. One in the SW looks like a tenuous double and the NW shows a spaced-out hedgerow prom. I can see a few other tiny ones around the disc. I can see the spicule layer but poor seeing would make any hope of seeing the individual spicules nil. Despite the seeing the spicule mottling shows good contrast in the SMII90.

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair Wedge. 21.5x and 54x ( WL )
Blank disc. I cannot even make out the granulation today!

Carpe Diem!

James

Nice to hear you could at least see some features in the Halpha today, never mind the WL (can't win them all) :)
