September 15 2020 WL Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today was a fairly quick set of observations between clouds that went from 1:05pm to 1:30pm EDT local time ( US ). Skies are mostly cloudy and the temp is a cool 66F and seeing like yesterday is well above average.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 62.5x ( WL )
This little cheap scope never ceases to amaze me! I can see almost all the low-contrast plage regions shown on the SDO HMI continuum image with close scrutiny. I can count 5 tiny faculae at the north pole! I see another facula nearing the limb in the NW. It's the one that has spawned a few tiny pores in the last couple of days. I see none now. I see another facula in the SW also near the limb. I see a single tiny facula at the south pole. I can also see faculae on the SE limb as well. I would have expected more to see this in the C102 using the wedge and don't usually get this good of performance out of the 70mm. I am sure the very good to excellent seeing I have had over the last 2-3 days has something to do with it. Clouds and lack of time have discouraged me from setting up my bigger heavier scopes. The granulation shows easily as a fine texture at 25x!!

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks as always James for your report and the SDO image.

Other than some proms today, it seems that we might still be in for a further few quiet days on the surface.

I note that apparently it has only just been proposed/announced that we are in Cycle #25, but certainly judging by previous comments from Mark etc., I am quite happy to still believe that we have been in #25 for around two months or more, but still a while for more regular activity in the offing...

https://www.weather.gov/news/201509-solar-cycle tells more and that this cycle now will likely be similar to #24 by around 2025...

CLEAR SKIES
Terry

I think we already have crossed over too. Probably somewhere between last December and June.

I am glad you are still seeing so much in white light James, the faculae can be just as entertaining as spots :hamster:

James:
Thanks for the clean nice image and report.
BTW, I just had the chance to make one FD and its versions that day.
Regards,
Eric.
