September 23 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session from 11:28am to 1:00pm EDT local time ( US ). Lots of high clouds. Temp is 64F at noon. Seeing fair.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see only two fairly small filaments on the disc. One in the NE and another near the limb in the NW. I can see four prom groups with mostly small fainter proms in the " four corners " of the solar disc. The plage in the NE is easy to see.

Traq 60mm w/Baader AstroSolar film. 35x and 70x ( WL )
The facular component of the plage seen in Ha is easily visible in white light. SDO HMIc shows a couple of pores within the facular complex but I cannot see them using the Traq 60. I cannot make out any granulation either. Probably because of peering through high clouds and so-so seeing.

Carpe Lumen!

James

I think you will need more than the table when the Sun dives below the tree-line - in the winter months James.
(a Chain-Saw or some very tall ladders with a useable platform on top, or even a hot-air balloon !!! ).

Thanks for the updates and images
Terry

Thanks for your report, James. The winter months certainly do bring their challenges. Time for doing those equipment maintenance tasks that were put off during the summer. :)

I think you would need very good eyesight and seeing to see those pores in WL as they are so tiny but at least the Halpha view was a good one :hamster:

Winter is always a testing time for solar. Last Christmas I had a special window installed in my upstairs bedroom window, I'm looking forward to utilising it more this winter weather permitted :) https://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandra ... 535593245/

That's a nice idea! I sometimes observe out of my sliding glass door in cold weather for a quick view. Mixing of warm are from inside the house and cold air outside can be an issue though. If your room can be shut off from the rest of the house and be allowed to cool before the session this could be lessened though.
