Zoom Meeting - Any Interest

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I have been meaning to post a note about the potential to start an online meeting for members to meet and discuss whats on their minds. Can be solar imaging , equipment, or today's weather. I see that the idea of a zoom meeting was brought up in the post by Pedro for his new observatory, so maybe there is enough interest to try it out. I have been taking part in Zoom based meetings for the two astronomy clubs I belong to since Ontario started to lock down in the spring and they work quite well with the ability to video chat and share materials with the group.

I have traditionally met up with those members who attend NEAF in NY, but missed the chance to see Eric, Franco, Stephen, Rainer and others this past spring. It was also great to meet up with Alexandra, Derek, and Stuart in the summer of 2019 when Sandy and I visited the UK. I think the Zoom style chat would be a great addition to the exchange we have in place already.

Of course, the greatest challenge is finding a time that works for the majority of those who wish to partake. In my mind, a mid after noon start for east coast North American members would allow the west coast to sign in around their noon and still be early evening in much of Europe. This is just me thinking out loud, and no matter what time we aim for it will be in the middle of the night for some of us. A Sunday session would avoid work conflicts as well...me thinking out loud again, LOL.

Lets explore this and see if we can come up with a potential plan if enough want to take part.

Brian

I’d be interested, Brian. Details would have to be by PM or email to avoid gate crashers, though.

It would be great to catch up with folks. Going a bit stir crazy with COVID restrictions.

Hi everyone...

It sounds like there is lots of interest in the idea of a zoom session. I guess there is a lot to organize but we have time to sort it out over the next few days.

The first critical factor is finding someone will to host among us. If anyone wishes to volunteer that would be great, especially if they have an upgraded account. It's not that i am unwilling, but I only have a guest account and limited to 40min sessions before they close (but we can log in again if needed).

The second item to sort out is how to set up invitations...another point to work on.

The last detail is to decide on a date and time that works for the majority.

As is, I'm looking forward to the inaugural chat :)

As Pedro mentioned it was Alexandra who first mentioned the idea of a Zoom meeting...I was just referencing it in Pedro's post about his new observatory. Thanks to Alexandra for making the suggestion.

I have a Zoom account with unlimited time and up to 300 participants, however the big pain is that I will be the only host so no one else can share a screen. Unless you have a Manchester University account I can't make you a co-host. So we can all chat easily enough but only I will be able to use screen share, so if anyone wanted to share something they would have to email it me :( University regulations I am afraid and I can't change it (set up at the Uni which I have no control over).

First of all thank you Alexandra for starting this idea. If yours is an offer to host this first meeting, I would be very happy to start just by having this first zoom encounter with other solarchat fellow imagers, while we try to develop a more comprehensive method. Just my five cents...

Hi Alexandra and all...

If you are willing to host the first session Alexandra we can work around the inability to share desktops to start with. It will be better from a participant standpoint not to have to log in each time the session expires in the free mode of Zoom.

If after the initial meeting we decide that the ability to share is needed, then we can work our way up to this option.

Count me in as well to take part.

Hi,

Sounds interesting but what do I need for a Zoom meeting.

The question is for the set up. I have a laptop with an integrated camera or I would need to set up a camera in the observatory.

My internet bandwidth is 100 mbps symmetrical e.g. up or down so there I do not think that would be a problem.

Another issue is that I use hearing aids and therefore I sometimes have difficulty in hearing ... not understanding.

When I hear correctly I understand correctly

What would the time frame be ?

Rainer,
Laptop and integrated webcam is fine for Zoom.
For those unfamiliar with Zoom, it is downloadable from the site here - https://zoom.us/download although you can "join" direct from an email link. ( some software will need to be downloaded to join however). It is free to download and use in the basic form, and although a valid email address is requested during the download/installation process, I have yet to receive any form of spam or junk email as a result. You may join a meeting via audio only should you not have a webcam or wish to be "incognito".

There are plenty of Zoom tutorials via youtube should you need assistance, an example is listed below -

Rainer, if you have earphones that can help with hearing. Also, it would help if everyone can join using their first name plus their solarchat name, helps with recognising people. Like mentioned above we will have to send the link out via PM for anyone interested, to stop the gate crashers.
Just need a date and time (UTC for astronomers).

Given the global reach of Solarchat it will be impossible to select a time that suits everyone in all regions without someone staying up very late or getting up very early.

For this one it looks like the participants are from the North/South American & European continents , so morning on the West Coast US, early afternoon East Coast US and early evening Europe could work. How about 6:00pm UTC on Sunday? There’s a little complication this Sunday as our clocks in Europe ‘fall back’ from summertime time, but in the US this doesn’t happen until November 1st, but I’m sure we can all deal with this accordingly. The Zoom invitation should take account of this anyhow, hopefully.

Anyhow, 6:00pm UK (which will also be 6:00 pm UTC on Sunday with the clock change) would be my proposal.

Stu and all...

That certainly works for me, and can accommodate changes should they be needed.

With the global scale of members, the ability to host a time an ideal fit for all is next to impossible as you mentioned. One club I'm in can't get consensus for day/time for people in a 30 mile radius

The first session will be a trial and error...adapt as we move forward.

I have a paid Zoom account also in case you don’t. Its limited to 45 minutes with the free account.

No need to worry about posting the invite here as I have been doing them 2 to 3 times weekly for various groups including Sunlit Earth! with no problems from crashers.

I can also advertise it on the Facebook group page for this forum

OK so the date is set
Sunday 25th October at 18:00 UTC

The Zoom link will be posted here on Saturday.

It will be a very informal and friendly chat, you can join and just listen, or join and chat a lot it is up to you. A good time to ask any burning questions too. If it is clear we might also get a live solar view as well!

It will be great to see what everyone looks and sounds like :) pity I haven't had my hair done for 7 months :(

Hi Stu,

We in México do change to Wintertime on Sunday 25 at 02:00 hours. So what time would 6 pm UK time be in México ?

As you in UK also change to Wintertime the difference with UK and Mexico is 6 hours and is it correct to say it is 12:00 hours in México ?

   Just found out that UK has a different time then Europe

While Frankfurt, Madrid and Paris are 7 hours ahead, London is ony 6 hours ahead in the same way as Lisbon ...

Thanks and answered my question myself

If you are struggling with time here is a useful site which tells you the time in Greenwich Mean time, this is the same time as Universal time used by astronomers. If you look at the clock, then look at your time you can work out the difference (or use the converter tool).

Or have this website open and wait till the clock strikes 18:00

Alexandra...

Posting the link will save having to collect e-mails and sent invites, so that will make it easy.

After the first session we will all have a better idea of what if anything, needs to be tweaked.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Re: Zoom Meeting - Any Interest

Can we be clear what to expect from just turning up on Charlie Bates Facebook page at the relevant time?
Will it be sound only? Sound, video and pictures, where the contributors have their own webcams?

Will having downloaded Zoom beforehand offer a better experience even if we don't actively participate?
I have zero experience of Zoom. Nor of live FB meetings for that matter.

How long is this Zoom meeting likely to last?

Thanks to all concerned. :bow

Hi,

May I promote this on my forum www.astroforo.net ? The forum has only 20 members

There are some solar imagers who are not members of this forum.

Thanks Rainer

The Zoom platform allows live video and audio with each participant who has it enabled...basically like a conference table with each person having a small window with their camera feed showing. It can be a simple discussion between participants or there is the ability to share your desktop if the session is setup or sharing is allowed. When you share your desktop it becomes the main background and you can show images, videos, live telescope camera feed, etc. It will take a session or two to figure it all out.

If you have a webcam and microphone setup (laptop or smart phone have this already in place), and once you install the Zoom app there are instructions on setting both the camera and mic up. I can't speak to using a phone, but have been in meetings where participants do so.

It is also possible to mute the mic if you have a noisy background (barking dog, kids, etc) so as not to interrupt the discussion, and the video can be shut off if you wish as well and quickly turn on again if you want to be seen.

That's a quick overview of what to expect...there is also a discussion area available where you can type questions/comments if you do not have a mic working or want to message something to all or one person via keyboard.

I think if you joined Zoom even if you muted your microphone and video feed you would enjoy it more. Then if you wanted to chat you can just unmute. On Facebook I think you would only be able to watch and listen, you won't be able to contribute.

Please don't be scared of Zoom, we are all going to be friends, it will be like having a chat at the pub. I would recommend going to the Zoom site and joining as a free member. Then in your profile if you could put your first name in and maybe perhaps put your solarchat name in the surname it would help everyone recognise who you are. Sometimes we only know you by your solarchat name. It isn't compulsory so don't fret if you can't do it.

It would be nice to get to know you all, and bring a drink, your breakfast juice, your cup of coffee, your pint of beer depending where you are in the world.

When you click the Zoom link everything will happen automatically. Remember to 'Join with Audio' and 'Join with video' so you can hear and see. Then if you feel shy if you hover over the bottom left of the window you will see a picture of a microphone and video, if you click it you can mute yourself etc.

We can chat about the weather, the sun, software, imaging problems, your dog, your cat, autumn colours, wildlife you have seen, just about anything
you would if we met in person :) let's have fun. I am sure if Stephen is on the chat Star Trek will come up somewhere

Sure Rainer, if they have an interest in the Sun etc they can come too as long as you trust them :)

Rusted, you can leave whenever you want :) I'm not sure how long it will be, it could last 5 minutes or an hour and half. Hopefully not for hours ;)
Like when you are at the pub, you can take your leave if you have to go :)

Thanks, Brian and Alexandra, but I shall definitely be practising "remote social distancing" for this round. :D

BTW: My research discovered that Stephen has a YouTube presence.
Perhaps the meeting will be televised after the event? ;)
