November 2 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 11:03am to 11:34am EST local time ( US ). Skies are clear with windy conditions. Temp is 41F and seeing is poor. I have left the scopes out to return for views up until early afternoon before work.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
First off I notice eight filaments strung across the NW quadrant of the disc. Five of these are easy to see. They actually stretch slightly in from the NE quadrant all the way to the NW limb ending in a prominence seen there, an off-center polar crown of filaments! I also see three filaments in the southeast quadrant near an emerging active area on the limb. In DS I can see three prominences on the limb. One in an emerging bright active area in the SE and another in the SW.The third joins the polar crown filaments in the NW.

I can see only one easy plage today. One in the NE. However I can see faint disturbances in the NW and the SE. There is also an emerging AR on the SE limb. I see no trace of the plage of AR12779 for it has now disappeared around the western limb. Seeing the spicule layer at the limb is impossible due to poor seeing and the mottles are of moderate contrast today.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge. 55x ( WL )
I can see only one faculae today. The facular component of the plage seen in the NE in Ha. I can see a single pore within it. I can also see an emerging spot in the new active region on the SE limb! It's very close to the limb and takes a close look to see it. Granulation invisible due to poor seeing.

Carpe Diem!

James

At least I managed a short imaging session early this afternoon before clouds rolled-in and then now the sky is well-clear, but too late for Solar.

Very Windy but at least I managed 3-lights..

Thanks your quiet report James

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
Solar observing has become a very relaxing and peaceful time for me. A quiet time indeed. A daily " ritual ". I do miss the days of summer already though with it's warm days and high sun. An observatory would be so nice this time of year. Maybe someday. Even a simple shed to keep the scopes in and a pad to set them on outside would really help. I did have one of these simple observatories at one time. Back in the 1980s. It's some thing to plan for.

One thing to thing about James, is that as one gets older (and more often than not - busier) the time allowed for Solar or night time observing seems to get shorter, so anything to save the setting-up time as well as the lugging around of gear, becomes more important.

When I was flying so often during the week-days and some nights, it was very difficult to find the time to partake in any astronomy, but since my retirement and normally ceasing flying, then at least I have the time now (and especially whilst again we are in "Lockdown"). So the need for a purpose-designed and built observatory became paramount and had been completed in time. It was primarily a Solar Observatory, but has been used for other observations and imaging - which I intend to do more in the future...

Take Care and be SAFE.
Cheers
Terry

Terry,
It will be a few years before I can retire. I hope I can get an observatory of some type up before then.

But I bought two Coronado Ha scopes within a years time. I guess anything is possible.
