November 18 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time 11:32am until 1:00pm EST local time ( US ). Temp 50F. Clear skies with poor seeing.

Coronado SolarMax II 90DS. 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
Like yesterday, today's seeing is poor making fine details hard to see. I first off see AR12782 in the SW divided into two plages. The new disturbance in the SE has now been officially labeled AR12783. I can see a N-S oriented filament within it and it's spot to the east. The plage is more apparent than it was yesterday and is spread out quite large.

I can see three easy filaments on the disc. A broken half-loop shaped one in the northeast and two smaller ones SE of AR12782. Two nice prominence groups are present on the NE limb. The northernmost of these shows decent detail and is quite bright despite the poor seeing. It is composed of three individuals with the southernmost of these curled into an S shape. The center one shows a top swept southward and the northernmost one looks windswept. The group south of these is fainter and resembles a row of bushes. I see a small number of other proms around the disc but nothing noteworthy.

The spicule layer is not seen and the mottles are soft today due to seeing conditions.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair Wedge. 55x ( WL )
The most obvious thing in white-light is the spot of AR12783. I can see the darker umbra surrounded by the lighter penumbra. I can see no detail within the spot at all outside of this. I can see the facular component of AR12783. I can also see another faint patch of faculae in the northeast.

Poor seeing renders the granulation invisible and the edge of the sun is wavy!

Carpe Lumen!

James

Good to hear that you managed to get a peek in, James (conditions aside).

Hi James,

Were you able to see the spot on AR2783?

Yes. In the new AR, 12783. It has a penumbra surrounding a darker umbra.

The Coronados take some learning to use and I have never seen the tuned in sweet spot cover the whole field of view but the 90 I have performs very well and is capable of showing fine detail even at 100 power or more given enough illumination and good seeing. I often can see much of what the GONG images show using it. The 60 does well but lacks the resolution. I can’t speak for Lunt or Solarscope but the Coronados are certainly different from white light viewing.
