November 26 2020 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 11:30am until 12:35pm EST local time ( US ). Skies are mostly clear. Temp is 60F. Seeing is a bit above average.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 33x, and 50x. ( Ha )
The first thing I notice is the big plage connecting AR12785 and AR12786. I cannot figure out why they assigned them different numbers. It looks like one big system to me. The plage starts at the big spot in the east and winds north then east and then south and then westward until finally terminating at the smaller southwestern spot. This can be seen in the GONG Cerro Tololo Ha image but is overexposed. It is much easier to see visually and is quite bright. It's like a winding river of light from one spot to another. I can also see a couple of filaments within the system. AR12783 to the west is easy too but not as big and bright. I can see it's spot and a single filament. I can also see the fainter plage of AR12784 in the NW. It's superimposed filament is easy.

I see two easy filaments south of the AR12785-6 complex and two more SE of AR12783. There are also two more near the NW limb. I can see all but the faintest prominences shown in the GONG CerroTololo Ha image. The ones in the NE are quite bright with one hugging the limb. The SE shows a tall but faint one and the SW one looks like a splash.

The mottles show good contrast today and I could see the spicule layer on the limb at 50x.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 62.5x ( WL )
The spots of AR12785-6 show nice detail. I can see detail within the penumbra of the larger one. I also can easily see a couple of light bridges within it's umbra. I see a couple of other spot patches to it's southeast and the spot southwest of it also sports umbral/penumbral structure. The southwestern spot is probably Earth-sized and the big eastern one the size of the planet Neptune! I can only see faculae in the easternmost part of the AR. I can see one spot in AR12783 ( probably Earth-sized ) followed to the east by what appears to be two clusters of pores. I can resolve a few of these but SDO shows more. I can see some faculae west of it towards the limb. I can see no trace of AR12784 in white-light.

I can without difficulty see the fine solar granulation.

I also took a couple of pics with my iPhone. As soon as I get a chance I will get everything set up for my new ZWO camera to use it. Once I learn how to use it I should finally be able to take images that will exceed what I can see by eye.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Hi James,
Your captures with the iPhone have come out well and will be interesting to see your first results with the ZWO cam.

Just pop a ZWO in and see what happens as the screen will tell all, which you normally just need to alter the focusing of the scope until you see either the edge of the limb as sharp and/or a nice sharp image of the spots, although it/they will be as sharp as possible if the limb-edge is sharp first. If you know the scope is pointing to the Sun and you get a very-bright/white screen, then very likely you need to adjust the "EXPOSURE" times as mentioned below here..

Might help if somebody can concentrate on the screen as well - unless it is close enough for you to do all. Very likely the brightness/contrast will be needed to be adjusted at this point of the imaging session - requiring adjustment of the "EXPOSURE" time which will likely by quite low as a matter of only a very-few "ms" (mili-seconds) and with an "Analogue Gain" of the slider fully-left of the adjustment.

The "DISPLAY CONTROLS" can be adjusted, but they do not affect the camera-downloads, as they only affect the pc-screen itself...

I recommend SharpCap as being your first camera-download to pc-program as is the simplest to learn by for the ZWO cameras, although others may tell you otherwise. ZWO do also have their own program - which looks good, but haven't had a chance to try it out due to the low-level Sun...

Testing the camera indoors on it's own will allow you to see yourself (if you wish) or through a telescope, and also allow you to fiddle with the adjustments (as above), but worthwhile making a note of which adjustments and what they have been adjusted to, for returning to the original, as SharpCap may well remember a particular camera's settings for future use...

The "HELP" drop-down tab will tell you all about SharpCap and what it can do...

Best Wishes and hope you don't need radar assistance...

Thanks vm for your excellent daily reports.

Regards
Terry

Yep, Terry I am gonna have to play with it. Learn about it. See how it works. The ZWO camera has more potential than my iPhone or DSLR. It has the possibility of out resolving my eye. Something I have not quite been able to do with iPhone or DSLR.

Eric, Your pictures today were really nice! You resolved the light bridge in that big spot wonderfully in Ha!

Wow!! superb images with the iPhone James :hamster: :bow
As regards to AR12785 and 6, to answer that you need to view the magnetic data, here it is easier to see that there is quite clearly 2 separate regions. An active region always has a north and a south pole (white and black) I hope this helps

Thank you Alexandra on the iPhone images. I have gotten a lot better with the phone and a close friend of mine has really complimented me on those last images. Now I need to graduate to the next level. The ZWO camera. But I still don't think I have exhausted the phone's capabilities yet.

The magnetic data does show plainly that they are different systems. Something not apparent visually.
