November 27 2020 Observations
Session time from 10:45am until 1:46pm EST local time. Skies are clear. Temperature is 62F. Seeing is rough.
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 42x ( Ha )
The first thing I notice is the large area affected by the AR12785 and AR12786 systems in the SE. The plage winds north, east and south around the spot of AR12786 and connects to the eastward plage of AR12785 east of it's spot. Around noon I noticed a significant brightening of a small area of plage southeast of the spot. It was brief but watching over the next hour I saw that whole side of plage brighten up and dim down again. Some activity is certainly going on there!
I can see at least five thin filaments radiating outwards from the big spot of AR12786. All north, east and south of it. I can easily see a raylike pattern centering on the spot of AR12785. Both of these systems have a large effect on the spicule field surrounding them.
AR12783 is easily seen in the SW but is no where near as large or active as the two systems in the SE. I can see it's plage centering on it's spot. I also see three filaments near it. Some tiny but bright proms are on the limb near it. I can see the disturbance of AR12784 far NE of AR12783 in the northern hemisphere's NW quadrant. A filament just off the limb is NW of it and not difficult to see.
I see two other minor AR disturbances. One tiny plage NE of AR12786 and another disturbance in the NE just off the limb.
I see a number of prominences on the limb. Three really stand out SE of AR12786. I see another on the NE limb and another on the NW limb just north of the solar equator. Below it are some small bright ones near AR12783. I see two filaments in the SE not associated with the active regions located there. A large one almost due south of AR12786 and another SE of AR12785. I see a couple SE of AR12783 and a small lone filament in the NE quadrant.
Though a bit soft the mottling of the chromosphere shows up well. I did not notice the spicule layer on the limb.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge. 50x ( WL )
WoW the spot of AR12786 is big! It's penumbra is easy and the umbra curls up to the north on it's eastern end. I can see a number of smaller spots/pores near it, especially some in a line near a gap in the larger spots penumbra in it's SE. Rough seeing makes seeing minute detail and small pores difficult. I cannot usefully use higher magnifications. The smaller spot of AR12785 seems to be holding together better and is showing no signs of decay. It's penumbra is oval shaped and it's umbra follows suit. I cannot see their faculae today but I do see an emerging area of faculae SE of them near the limb.
AR12783 can be seen in the SW. It's well structured spot with a couple of pores are glimpsed east of it. I can without trouble see the faculae to the system. I can also with difficulty see a couple of dots of faculae in the NW near the limb.
I see another new AR near the NE limb corresponding with a disturbance seen there in Ha.. It's faculae is easy and it has a single tiny spot!
All while listening to Cecilia Bartoli, St. Petersburg and Constance Demby, Through the Stargate.
Carpe Lumen!

Re: November 27 2020 Observations
Very interesting and excellent report of the action James.
Glad you got early glimpses of what is beginning to appear on the East Limb.
Unfortunately totally clouded-out here today, but have put the WL Orion ED80T-CF through the washing-machine and got rid of just a few dusties on the objective lens, but there is some within the triplet - which goes back to bad-manufacture.
One other mod completed to clear-up another manufacture-snag, so now just waiting for some Sun to look visually and possibly image through the R2 system.
Thanks and cheers
Terry

Re: November 27 2020 Observations
Terry,
It was clear at 2:00pm when I brought the scope in. By 4:00pm it was completely overcast!
My Astro-Tech AT72EDII refractor has a few dusties on the inside of the objective. I keep it closed up and have no idea how they have gotten there. They don't seem to affect it's performance though.

Re: November 27 2020 Observations
Thanks for that James and certainly I took a few images through the ED80 using my Panasonic DMC-G2 of just a cloudy sky-view and no sign of any dusties causing an issue, so will check the older cameras and the HW, in case there is something there...
I always keep dust-caps on all gear including cameras, so like you I also don't know, but definitely the dust on the objective is not on either outside of the triplet, so reckon it was not assembled in a clean room at manufacture...
Cheers
Terry

Re: November 27 2020 Observations
Thanks Brian. You imagers have your pictures to speak for you. I have to use descriptions for what I see. I do use GONG and SDO images to help guide me where to look and what to look for. I hope to use my own images more in the future to assist with my descriptions. I am glad to hear that my review is great!
Thanks again.

Re: November 27 2020 Observations
Superb report James although it makes me weep, totally clouded out and rain here this weekend, nooooo I so wanted to see the Sun
Tried to look up the music but nothing came up in Google, are they all one or 3 separate? We are currently re-watching all of Stargate SG1 at the moment and I am guessing they aren't related?

Lol. No they are not related. Demby's album predates Stargate SG1 by a number of years.Montana wrote: ↑Sat Nov 28, 2020 3:02 pm Superb report James although it makes me weep, totally clouded out and rain here this weekend, nooooo I so wanted to see the Sun
