New scope and FD image on Nov. 27th

Post by arnedanielsen »

With the Sun up for less than 7 hours and only reaching a maximum altitude of 9 degrees it’s rather challenging to carry out solar imaging from my high latitude of almost 60 degrees North at this time of the year. However, having bought a second-hand Coronado SolarMax 60 II a few weeks back, I’ve been eager to use every possibility to test and familiarize myself with the scope.
The scope itself is very small and light-weight and combined with a Sky-Watcher SolarQuest mount it makes a handy setup for quick sessions – both visual and imaging. Todays image my best is so far with this setup and I’m quite happy with it considering that it was obtained with a solar altitude of only 9 degrees.
Equipment used for this image was Coronado SolarMax 60 II w/BF15 filter, CeMax 2x barlow, Baader 35nm H-Alpha filter and ASI ZWO 1600MM Pro camera. Everything mounted on a Sky-Watcher SolarQuest mount.
Stacking was done in Autostakkert 3, sharpening in AstraImage and contrast stretching in Adobe PhotoShop.

Best regards,
Arne

Very nice image!

I have a Coronado SolarMax II 60 as well and use mine often. It does well. Mine is on a Coronado Altazimuth mount and that SolarQuest mount is a BIG plus. I need to purchase one of those or the AZGTI model. And I just purchased a ZWO camera as well.

I complain of my low sun and it's nothing compared to what you see. You do have really long summer days don't you?

Hi Arne,
You have a very nice set-up there and the weather looks glorious compared with ours in S.E.England.
The image has come-out very well showing lots of detail as well as the on-coming AR at the N.E. Limb.

Very well done
Terry

Thanks James,

The SolarQuest mount is very nice for this purpose. Very simple to use and works good for a small scope and short focallenght like this.

Starts up, aligns and tracks the Sun in seconds. Here’s a video I shot shortly after receiving the scope: https://youtu.be/-ymZXbMJgJc

During midsummer we get almost 19 hours of daylight, so I guess it evens out. 😊

Congrats on your new camera!

Best regards,
Arne

Thanks Terry,

It’s been rather cloudy and lots of rain here as well, but last week and the week before had some nice sunny days.

Nice results, Arne.

The SolarQuest is indeed a nice little piece of kit for a quick session.

Thanks Alexandra, Brian and Jochen!

Alexandra: During the last couple of weeks I’ve also had to make use of our upstairs balcony in order to image the Sun.
