AR2786 M-class flare

Post by JochenM »

It looks like our parent star fired off a big M-class flare a few hours ago. Shows up quite clearly in the GOES satellite X-ray flux measurements (and spaceweather issued an alert as well); so I'm assuming it's AR2786 that's the culprit here (and hence probably earth directed).

A long shot; but anyone managed to capture anything (cloudy here)?

It wasn't AR2786 apparently (and hence also not earth directed), but rather one of the AR's on the sun's rear side (from our perspective).

Brian (Mapleridge) sent me a picture of post flare loops on Whatsapp to torture me this afternoon so I guess he caught this. I look forward to his post :)

Thanks for the heads-up Jochen and exactly as I thought would likely occur this weekend.

No doubt radio-communications around our globe will know all about that event...

Cheers

Indeed Jochen, it certainly does seem that the 2785/6 AR's were not the culprit for this flare, rather an oncoming AR over the border.

Which of the two oncoming AR's in the S.East can't be certain, but either-way was quite a CME to say the least.

Attached images from STEREO with an 8-hour difference might answer which was responsible.

Cheers
Terry
