November 29th - The Sun Awakens

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

Well, I have to say that my session on Sunday (November 29th) was the best in the past few years since the Sun slipped in solar minimum. Not only were there 4 large AR's and a couple in development, but a phenomenal post flare loop prom on the SE limb. I see many manged to capture these features...congratulations to all for the successes!!!

I'll start with the full disk image series. First is the Ha image through the LS80T/DSII/B1800Ha solar scope and an ASI174mm camera:
Full-Ha_11292020.jpg
Full-Ha_11292020.jpg (524.79 KiB) Viewed 731 times
The WL and CaK images below were taken through the Stellarvue110 OTA and an ASI1600MM camera. The first is the WL image, though the Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader Continuum filter:
SV110_WL_11_03_26-IMP.jpg
SV110_WL_11_03_26-IMP.jpg (751.38 KiB) Viewed 731 times
followed by the CaK version through a modified Lunt Solar Wedge/B1800CaK/Baader K-Line filter set:
SV110_CaKK_11_29_45-IMP.jpg
SV110_CaKK_11_29_45-IMP.jpg (410.18 KiB) Viewed 731 times
As we could see in the full disk Ha image, the AR's 2785/2786/proto2789 cover an immense area in the southern hemisphere. The image below is a multi frame mosaic of these AR's taken through the modded CR-150/DSII/B1800Ha + 2.7x tele-centric + ASI174MM camera. From the Eastern limb, moving west across the disk we have AR2789, 2786, 2788, and 2785:
South.jpg

AR2787 was starting its trek across the disk after recently rotating into view on the NE limb:

It looks like I missed AR273 on the SW limb...oops :o

So with all this activity on the disk, the large number of proms were icing on the cake. These images are through the same Modded CR-150 setup as used for the AR's. The most impressive prom in years has to the the large loop prom that was left after the solar flare earlier in the day. For reference, this image below was taken at 15:49UT:
27x_CR-150_DSII-15_10_49_35_out.jpg
27x_CR-150_DSII-15_10_49_35_out.jpg (179.1 KiB) Viewed 730 times
There were many other proms which would have looked pretty good if not for the post flare show off ;) The remaining proms are shown as we move clockwise around the limb form the SE:
27x_CR-150_DSII-15_10_38_45_out.jpg
27x_CR-150_DSII-15_10_38_45_out.jpg (104.81 KiB) Viewed 730 times

27x_CR-150_DSII-15_10_44_41_out.jpg (118.48 KiB) Viewed 730 times
After the Ha targets were finished, I went back to the Stellarvue 110 and added a 5x Powermate to get higher resolution images of the big AR's in WL and CaK. The WL image is below:
5x_SV110_WL_11_19_52-IMP_v2.jpg
5x_SV110_WL_11_19_52-IMP_v2.jpg (1 MiB) Viewed 730 times
The last images of the session were with the 5x Powermate through the CaK filter set, but the seeing had become very poor as I approached the noon hour and most video clips were pretty much garbage...I should have used a 2x or 3x but was rushing. Below is the CaK image that I managed to get a little detail from:
5x_SV110_CaKK_11_35_51B-IMP.jpg
5x_SV110_CaKK_11_35_51B-IMP.jpg (526.75 KiB) Viewed 730 times
This is all the images I have for now...still processing a few of the big AR and the loop prom to see if I can make an animation...will post if they turn out ;)

As always, questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

A really productive session, Brian. Everything looks great: I particularly like all the work you did with the proms, that came out really well, delicate and with great detail.

Brian,
Absolutely stunning work on all accounts. You have captured those post flare coronal loop prominences very well. I still am upset because I missed them due to clouds. I got the alert on my phone concerning the flare. But alas. No clear sky. But thanks to You, Phil and Eric I have gotten stunning views! Thank You.

Wow - what a phenomenal record of the Sun - outstanding work! Post Flare Loops are one of my favourite features & your images of them pop. 10/10!

James, Matt, Alexandra, and Stardust...

Your comments and feedback on this set of images are very much appreciated...thanks :bow

Alexandra, the clouds that some members had on Sunday stole the show for many :( I hope that the weather gives you all in the UK a break and time to take in the AR's that we have now too!

That’s how I’m feeling Alexandra. It’s all well and good that Sun is active again, but not during a British winter.....

Great images Brian!

Arnie and Dan...

Thanks for your comments on the session...very much appreciated :bow

The majority of last weeks AR's were going around the western limb today, but a few more on the disk still make a great view!
