December 3 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 11:18am until 12:12pm EST local time ( US ). Skies are mostly clear with just a few high clouds. Temperature is 50F. Seeing is fair.

Coronado SolarMax II 60DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see three plage regions in the south. AR12785-6-8 in the SW, AR12789 in the middle and AR12790 in the SE. I can see one filament in AR12786 with another 2 north of the big spot. The plage of AR12790 bends around to the east of the spot before ending south of it. I see a small dark filament there. I see three filaments in a line below the belt of plages. Below the middle plage I see three others curving east and above the easternmost of the three I see a small spotlike filament.

In the north I see a filament in the NNW and AR12787 is faintly visible. However I did pick up a filament running N-S within it!

The mottles are of fair contrast today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
The large active AR complex in the SW is easy with faculae now becoming easily visible as they near the limb. The well structured spot of AR12785 is nearing the limb. The large " fuzzy animal " spot of AR12786 has lost it's penumbral tail and in it's place I see two small spots. The eastward side of the spot appears to be gradually decaying. The spot may end up round before decaying off but we probably won't see it because it will soon round the SW limb and be out of sight.

AR12790 in the SE shows a classic fair-sized sunspot with an arc of pores trailing east and then south. I can see 5 of these. The SDO HMI instrument shows 8. I could have resolved more in better seeing. I see two more, close together to the SE of the larger spot. Below the arc of pores.

I can see the faculae of AR12790 to the SE of the bigger spot. I can also see another facula to the NE of AR12790, almost at the limb. It must be another emerging active region! I don't see any spots or pores there.

Granulation is soft but visible today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Sorry Alexandra. I often think of you when observing. I try to make as clear as possible what I see so I can " see " for those under grey skies. Ones such as you. I know it's not the same as seeing/imaging it yourself but still it's better than nothing I guess.

At least you got those. It's certainly better than a complete cloud-out.

Good report, James.
Like with Alexandra, just rain and more rain here.

It looks like rain here in western North Carolina today. Totally overcast.
