January 15 2021 Observations. Spots!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 2:13pm until 2:50pm EDT local time ( US ). The skies are partly cloudy and the seeing is surprisingly good! The temperature is 48F.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
I can see two filaments in the SW and two in the SE. In doublestack I can see no prominences on the limb. I can see three plage areas. Two on the south-central disc and the third in the SW quadrant. The middle of the three shows a long fine filament.

The mottles show up well today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
I can see three small sunspots! They appear to be associated with the centermost of the plages see in Ha. One is a double spot that appears single at low power. Both 50x and 62.5x reveal their double nature. The spot east of the double appears elongated east-west. At 62.5x I can pick up two tiny pores located SE of the larger spots. They are hardly bigger than the granules themselves but darker. I did find the granulation easy today. It would have been a good day for the larger scopes!

I also see some south pole faculae! I can pick up a couple of tiny ones very near the pole and and one a bit easier in the SSE. I don't see any near the north pole.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Yes James, the SDO images clearly shows the layout of the twin-spot areas.
Far too early to say whether these might grow larger and even flare, but certainly ends the +12-day blankness at last.

Let's hope also the the oncoming S/E-AR at least will also blossom into something worthwhile...

Thanks for the excellent and interesting report.

Terry

I have gotten pretty toasty observing in the summer in just a pair of shorts, sandals and a wide-brimmed bush hat! I have certainly gotten my daily dose of vitamin D!!

Your temperature is similar to ours James. Our air mass has changed from one of polar origins back to a maritime Atlantic source. We had heavy rain overnight but this has passed through now. I'm semi optimistic about the sky breaking later on today. It's good we have some activity on the disk. Thanks for your report!

Mark,
So far I have clouds and colder weather today. I am heading to Rock Hill S.C. to see a friend. I am taking my SMII60 and AT72EDII with me. Good luck on sunny skies and you are welcome!

James
