January 18 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 10:00am until Noon EST local time ( US ). Skies are clear. Seeing is fair. The temperature is 45F. From Rock Hill SC.

Coronado SMII60 DS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
First off I can see several filaments on the disc. All in the southern hemisphere. Two really dark ones on the south-central disc. Two in the SE connected by a thin section. They are really dark and easy too. I also easily see another filament very near the SE limb. There is also a filament near the SW limb near a prominence.

I see three prominences. One tiny one in the NE and another in the SE. I see a larger one in the SW.

I see a pale plage ( AR12796 ) in the SW quadrant.

The spicule mottling shows fair contrast today.

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 23.5x and 71.5x WL
I see a double-spot in the SE surrounded by a common penumbra. I also see a pore nearer the limb surrounded by bright faculae. These are visible parts of the new AR12797 in the SE quadrant. I can also see some faint faculae in the SW.

I can see the fine solar granulation but not as well as I could yesterday.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Thanks James, nice report, glad we have a bit more to look at. Storms here for a couple of days then forecast to brighten up at the end of the week. I might see if I can have a working at home day on friday for some cheeky lunchtime solar. I see what you mean when you said how green the grass was in my xmas boat pictures, yours is really quite brown in comparison! Reminds me of the grass in Iceland. Your sky looks really blue though!

Thanks James and to be honest, your grass in the image looks more like dirty-coloured snow.
Very wet weather overnight here and looks like the worst of the oncoming storm is up north of S.E.England...

Cheers
Terry

Sounds like the Sun is becoming very interesting again :hamster:

I too was gasping at your grass, it looks very brown, are you having very dry weather/drought at the moment. My grass is bright emerald green with all the rain we have here. I'll kindly donate some for you (rain not grass).

Mark, and Alexandra too!
The grass in my yard is a bit greener than this but certainly not as green as in your boat pictures. My friend in Rock Hill has Bermudagrass which dies back in the winter to a completely brown color. My home has field fescue which does turn dull and stop growing in the winter but doesn’t turn brown like Bermudagrass does. Blue skies I often have but I don’t think it is gonna be today. Good luck on your late-week worktime solar session!

I anticipate warmer weather and we are almost a month past the solstice. WooHoo!!! 🎉

Blessings

James
