January 23 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is short. From 9:20am until 9:41am EST local time ( US ). Clear skies but horrible seeing! The temperature is 36F.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
Despite the poor seeing I can see most of the detail shown on GONG's Cerro Tololo Ha image. 5 filaments in the SE. One filament in the NE near the limb. A faint challenging filament near the NW limb and a filament on the SW limb. I also see the plages of AR12797-98 nearing the central longitudinal meridian. I can see the double-spot of AR 12797 with a long thin filament south of it. I can also see the new AR12799 plage in the NW. I also see a new plage in the NE near the limb. It's below a group of prominences located nearby. Two of these prominences are easy and lean in towards one another. I see no other prominences around the disc.

The mottles are soft today but still visible across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x ( WL )
I can see the double spot oriented N-S of AR12797 and the single tiny spot of AR12798. In the NW I can see a single small spot of AR12799. That's all I can see in WL. No faculae at all and no granulation. The limb shimmers in waves and I did not even attempt any higher magnification.

Seize the Day SolarChatters!

James

Thanks James. Got some sun today too - mainly at the beginning and end of the day, but I got to do some visual and image which is nice. The activity that has just come round in the north remains spot free. I think the region that appeared yesterday has quietened back too sightly.

I'll be awaiting your images. Away to Lowndesville SC I go.

Lovely to hear you had a good view in the Halpha even if the WL was more trying, that's why it is good to have both wavelengths :hamster:

Thanks James as usual and have a safe journey.

Yes Mark the latest SDO image doesn't show the darkened area that I had previously believed to have seen, so perhaps it was a dying ember...
Who knows though, AR2799 appeared from a small AR...

Cheers
Terry

Sometimes you get regions of plage like this but they don't have the field strength (~1500gauss) to form spots.
