Monday Sun Jan 25th 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

I awoke to a scattering of snow this morning and the promise of sunshine from around 10:00am onwards, so I walked the dog, had breakfast and after a little wait to allow the Sun to clear my neighbour's rooftop, I got set up for a great morning session on the scopes.

FDs in all three lights and a few close views in Ha and Ca II K were all possible with almost cloud-free skies, which makes a really nice change as more often than not I'm chasing the cloud gaps.

Here's a SS Ha FD using my Lunt front etalon on a 72mm f6 fitted with a X2.5 PM/ Coronado BF15 and Basler acA1920-155um camera. Imaged as a 3 pane mosaic (could have been two, but I added a middle pane for good measure).

Switching over to the opposite side of the spectrum, now using a Tecnosky 125 mm f/7.8 with a modified Lunt B1800 Ca II K module and Basler 2440-75um, here's a full disk in ionised calcium. These are 4 pane mosaics.

Image20210125_CaK_FD_Colour by Stuart Green, on Flickr

Using the same scope and camera, I switched out the Lunt module for a Lacerta WL wedge fitted with a 540nm continuum filter and a couple of polarisers to knock down the image brightness. Again, imaged and processed as 4 pane mosaics. The sunspots look teeny weeny in these images. Just large pores, really.

Image20210125_WL_FD_colour by Stuart Green, on Flickr

The seeing conditions weren't too bad so I decided to try some higher magnification shots of the active regions in Ha and Ca K.

Here's the Ha version of AR2797 on my 150mm modified DS Lunt 35, imaged as a series of panes to capture the whole active region using a X2.5 PM and Basler acA1920-155um

Image20210125_Ha_AR_Mosaic by Stuart Green, on Flickr
This image includes the darkening effect observed closer to the limb.

In these images I've flattened out the gradient.

Image20210125_Ha_AR2797_Mono by Stuart Green, on Flickr

and added colour...

Image20210125_Ha_AR2797_Colour by Stuart Green, on Flickr

Here's part of the same region in Ca II K captured on the Tecnosky 125 mm now with a x2.5 PM and the Basler acA2440-75um.

Image20210125_CaK_AR2797_Mono by Stuart Green, on Flickr

I think I was pushing my luck with these at this time of the year and they may be a little over processed, but hey.....

Anyhow, thanks for looking.

Stu.

These are really impressive Stu! I think my favourite is the SS Ha FD, really nice! You sure you're still wanting to sell this? Seeing that disk has my wallet twitching...

Hi Stuart,

That is an awesome harvest! Interesting to see the images produced by Basler acA2440-75um. Any insights on it for high-res imaging?

Hi Alfred,

Many thanks for your comments.

Regarding the camera, the small pixel size (3.45um) will mean the images are over-sampled at high focal ratios (for high magnification views), but the main issue I've found with H-alpha is the generation of Newton's rings. Tilting helps, but it can still be a challenge.

Stuart and all. Here's an interesting comparison between your CaK image and the SDO 1600 image. The detail they show is very close. The main difference is the color used in processing! The SDO image may be just a wee bit sharper but again little difference. Very well done Stu!!

Where exactly does the SDO image lie on the solar spectrum?

yes, they're very similar. The SDO image you posted is 160 angstroms, CaK would be 3933angstroms - I think!

Ha...good one, Mark. On the whole I do think between all of us we do a pretty good job :)

James,
The SDO image is 1600 Angstroms, so well into the UV. I understand the image is from the transition region in the upper Chromosphere and the absorption line comes from carbon IV. There's quite a bit about this on the internet.

Cheers.

That's good! It is surprising how good we do compete with the pros!! We often exceed GONG and compete well against the SDO.

How does nanometers compare with angstroms? Related? Same? Similar?

WoW, and it tells me how narrow a bandpass our Ha etalons really are. I am still learning some of the finer points of solar tech.

That's a well-good sentiment Mark, so why not approach NASA and suggest that they could save so much dosh and get better images via SolarChat.
THEN ask NASA how much they would pay the SolarChat website and its' members for the privilege ???

AT least it would save zillions of dollars/pounds to NASA., albeit it could then make us amateurs then professionals and would likely then need us/SolarChat - declare the earnings to the relevant-governments for taxation purposes, so perhaps we should stay as amateurs... Simples...!!
