January 27 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 1:00pm to 1:40pm EST local time ( US ). The skies are partly cloudy and the temp is 57F. Seeing is a bit above average.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
I see a number of small filaments across the southern hemisphere. Two in the SE, two in SC and three in a disturbed area in the SW, Then I see two in the NW and a difficult one near a prom in the NE. None are prominent and they have to be searched out but they are visible.

I see two prominence areas in doublestack. A bright prom in the NE and a group of dimmer ones in the SE. The southernmost one is the easiest to see of the SE proms. Singlestack would have probably given a better view on these.

I see three plage areas. The plage area of AR12797-98 appears as a mere disturbance in the SW. I see two new plages in the northern hemisphere. One on each side of the central meridian. AR12799 appears to have rounded the limb. I see no trace of it.

The mottles are easily seen discwide today.

All in all it was a good day for the SMII 60. The 90 would have done better on fine detail and especially on the prominences. Maybe tomorrow.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see three tiny spots surrounded by difficult faculae in the north west central area of the disc. I also see two small spots in the AR12798 area in the SW. Faculae are easily seen stretching from the spots to the limb.

Granulation is easily seen today.

Seize the Sun!

James

40 minutes well spent James, let's hope some of this activity develops a bit.

Well "spotted" James on the new ones which should be AR2800.

Also your other surface features and prominence reports - show how well you see these.

Thanks vm
Terry

Terry,
I did well on the filaments and plages but GONG kicked my ass on the prominences.

It was a challenge. The SMII 90 would have made it so much easier.

Today is a cloud-out. Cold, cloudy with snow flurries. Very windy. Clearing is forecast for this evening but I will be at work.

You are welcome Eric. No solar for me today. Clouds with possible snow/ice/freezing rain tonight.
