February 2 2021. WL Only

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Everyone,
I observed just for a few minutes around 4:30pm. Today has mostly been cloudy and areas just north of me are blanketed in 5 inches of snow. I have none here in Edneyville. I am having to work first shift this week due to a series of meetings I am having to attend and the sun is low by the time I get home. Still some clearing occurred late and I was able to " shoot " the sun through the trees with the Orion 70mm white light solar telescope. It's cold ( 28F ) and very windy. The seeing was certainly less than perfect. I did catch a single small sunspot in the NW that was at the SW end of a patch of faculae. I can also easily see another patch of faculae west-southwest of the spot near the limb. I could just hint the granulation. The magnifications used are 25x and 50x.

Carpe Noctem!

James

You are welcome. I thought I was gonna miss out. The Sun is starting to climb a bit higher in the sky. It's becoming noticeable now.

Your weather maybe similar to the current weather in Scotland where much more snow has fallen and causing some problems, but here in the S.E.England for the third time lately, snow is forecast for this weekend, but so far other than a brief Sleet, nothing has occurred around my home town. In the county though some has fallen without known disrutptions.

Thanks again for your daily report James and AR2801 has no spot at around 2000Z TODAY (Wednesday)...

I tried to get the Sun this evening ( 2-3-21 ) after work around 4:45 to 5:00pm but had little success. Using the Coronado SMII60 I could with certainty see only one prominence. The seeing was horrible with the sun being so low and it was in the trees so I was viewing through a considerable amount of intervening limbs in the way. Working 2nd shift certainly has it's advantages with solar observing since I am usually home when the sun is higher in the sky. If I worked days it would decimate my solar observation program in the winter months.

You have done exceedingly-well of the last few months James for a working person and when eventually you are able to retire (like me) you may well appreciate that you have a tad more time to Solar-observe (in between finding many more jobs to do, keeping you as busy as ever)...

I know that for sure, even though I spent 10-years flying nearly every day after work-retirement, but at least keeps the "brain-box" ticking-over - well...

Cheers
Terry

I am not the only often-posting-observer. Pedro Re, Eric Roel and Rainer are also very often posting their sessions. They don't only post very often but usually have generally good weather conditions too. But are all three of them retired? In a meeting Stephen Ramsden said he liked quality over quantity and these three excel. But there are a lot of excellent imager/observers here on SolarChat. I am blessed to be here in such company!

That is correct James and when those you mentioned have clear skies, then we get the best images of the action and in some cases - even if their weather is perfect, they still produce the best images.

In fact when Pedro doesn't post images, one can tell that for a rare-change he's weather if not good...

As you correctly add, thanks to the many excellent other imagers here on SolarChat, is the chance to learn by their fab images...

Cheers
Terry

Cloudy today over Edneyville. No direct solar viewing for me. I'll have to rely on you guys and gal and SDO and GONG.

Yeah it went well. I have worked with engineers, technicians and engineer co-op trainees all week. It's been a learning experience. Next week I will be back to my normal second-shift evening hours. Solar will be easier. But I picked a good week to work first shift. It's been largely cloudy.

James

Sounds well-interesting then James.

I had the same experiences when starting to work with HeavyLift Cargo Airlines/Engineering Division a few years back. Learnt much and had lots to do throughout any 24-hour period. Worked on some very large aircraft types, with one at least still around in Cairns, Australia.

Those were the days...
Cheers
