3-2-2021 MY NEW IMAGE-STABILIZED SOLAR BINOCULARS

Post by EGRAY_OBSERVATORY »

Ever had the Binocular - shakes without a tripod ??

Well no more because the new Opticron Image-Stabilized (IS) Binoculars - have now been given a Solar-filter.

Briefly tested today on the Sun and previously on the Moon etc., they certainly make for a joy, for a quick-start glimpse of whatever.

Also is to be used for spotting those interesting aircraft - that so often pass within my view...

Although Canon were perhaps the first to introduce this IS system in Bino's a few years ago, they were expensive at the time, but two or three other named-brands are now available at a reduced-price.

Whether larger-magnification-Bino's are available in the future is difficult to know, as the Giro or electronic-sensors may or may not perform very well with those heavier-elements required..

Thanks for looking
CLEAR SKIES - please
Terry

They are certainly more powerful than my Lunt 8x32 solar binoculars and at 12x the image stabilization would be a must.

Thanks James. They are a "doddle" to use and the EP's have a decent quick detachable cover for both EP's in one.

Lightweight with a front-top focuser and easy to operate IS on/off switch on top within easy finger reach whilst viewing. Auto-Off is useful and just two AA-Batteries too. Easy battery access..

The Solar/Lunar disk is not full-size in the view, but well adequate for the purpose.

I suppose they could well be handy to take to your place of work for Solar viewing or even watching the "birds" go by !! Careful !!!

Overall very-well designed...

If you want more details, I can or via the web...

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
That's exactly what I got my Lunt SUNoculars for. A quick white light view for times I cannot take my scopes with me. However to make it truly worthwhile you need something to see and lately the white light sun has been bland. That should change as we head deeper into solar cycle 25 and get closer to solar minimum.

I agree James and I tried the Lunt SUNoculars a while back at my usual astro-suppliers and nearly got a pair, but as already had Sun-viewing Bins at the time, so spent a lot more dosh on something-else instead...

I've just been watching a police-helicopter through mine (with out the filter - of course) and switching the IS on and off is so easy and amazing that even trying to override the stabilization - just doesn't happen...

Bed time now, so speak to you soon..

Cheers

Now if someone would make a small portable pair of Ha solar binoculars. That would be nice! Maybe an 8x35 or a 10x35 set or a 12x40 set. Most likely a single stack version with an internal etalons. Maybe a single wheel could tune both etalons at once like a single wheel can focus both eyepieces at once!

Yes Mark- they are a very useful asset especially for spotting the Sun (or should I say Sun-spotting or just looking for the spots - even)...
But,
What James is suggesting is just something else to wish for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You forgot "Image Stabilisation" or the inclusion of a tripod - which itself would be difficult to carry-around for those quick looks... ?

In theory his suggestions can be achieved, but at what price ??

Keep-on thinking and wishing James...

Best Wishes on that
Terry

That sounds interesting, more on the birding front for me, are they very heavy to carry about? do they fit in your handbag?

For tripod less use I prefer no more than 10x. The Lunt 8x32s are small and light and easy to hold. Still, even they would benefit from image stabilization, especially for viewing smaller sunspots.

The Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars are easily small enough to be carried in a purse or handbag.

A set of Ha binos would probably be quite pricey.

Hi Alexandra,
The details you requested are:-
Weight of the Opticron IS 12x30 including two AAA (non-rechargeable) batteries, incl. neck strap. (I previously incorrectly said 2 x AA)
= 1Lb 6.75ozs
Soft-Carry Case = 5.75 ozs (Very well made/padded and well nice neck-strap and a belt-strap holder too (all included in weight).

Total = 1Lb 12.5ozs / 807.961409 GRAMS (less than a bag of Sugar) eh !!

I've no idea of the size of a ladies-handbag (I don't normally walk around with one either !!!), but the measurements of the case are:-
Height = 7-inches
Width = 5.5-inches
Depth = 2.5 to 3-inches maximum (depending on whether you want to put other things [like whatever] in the case - if you can find the room... !!!

On its' own, the Bino is :-6.0-inches high/length
4.5-inches reducing to 3-inches wide
2.5-inches maximum thickness

Each E.P Width = 22mm Long eye relief. Very nice and suitable for iPhone captures - I'd guess. + very nice 4-stage twist type retractable eyecups.
Splash-proof = Always a good thing...
Diopter adjustable included.
Battery Save + Green ON-light/Auto power off (5-mins).

Much lighter than any equivalent well-made (non-plastic) pair of Bino's - especially noting that these are solidly built and clearly not of cheap plastic materials. Can't confirm if in fact they are of metal/alloy main-construction, but do certainly feel the may be...

AS for your interest in birds, they will be most suitable as similar to the metal-winged types, where I can especially verify that. Also I know that Opticron supply nature-reserves, as my local one confirmed, but quicker and easier to buy direct from Opticron direct...

https://www.opticron.co.uk/our-products ... c-is-12x30 - for other specs. and Opticron were(are) a Vixen main agent based at Luton-Bedfordshire, who I have been to and found a very helpful firm to deal with in the past and by post.

Make a nice Xmas/Birthday/Valentine pressy...

Best Wishes
Terry

Very nice eye-relief Terry. A+ for eyeglass wearers like myself. The Lunt solar binos are adequate but not that good. The Lunt 8x32s are even smaller than yours.

Thanks James.
I guess the heavier-weight of the Opticron is partly due to the electronic-package and giros and sensors.

A little weight is also better for steady-viewing (up to a degree of course without a support/tripod) as the body does move with the heart-beat etc.,
but the stabilisation takes care of that, even if you fairly rapidly move the bins around the objective target...

Yes, glasses-wearers will find those sizes excellent and very similar to many EP's too...

I bet they are awesome! I can certainly see the use for a high quality set of image stabilized binoculars.

Here is my Lunt binos. They certainly are not expensive. Maybe Lunt in the future will come out with an improved image stabilized set. Are the

Yes James The Lunt ones I believe are the same that I tried a while back at a Lunt supplier in the UK.

Yes indeed James and referring to the previous post as "https://www.opticron.co.uk/our-products ... c-is-12x30
for other specs. and Opticron were(are) a Vixen main agent based at Luton-Bedfordshire, who I have been to and found a very helpful firm to deal with in the past and by post.
I imagine they will post abroad to the U.S. and maybe there is even a supplier in the states too... (might save any shipping and import duties)..

Very Good Night to you and thanks

I would love a 10x50 set of solar equipped IS binoculars. I am surprised more manufacturers do not make IS solar binoculars.

Coronado at one time had solar binos but they are not available anymore and they were not image stabilized.

The main problem James is, that for a large Solar Image in the view, requires higher magnification, which also means more robust or lager giro/electronic performance with the electronics and I suspect that the price of a specialised Solar-pair in either Ha, Cal-K or WL fully made by manufacturers, would probably be only a very limited sale by demand. In fact even the Ha side of viewing would require a much higher price, by hey who knows in the future ???

I would hazard a guess, judging by the present ultra-large bins around, that in the order of 10,000 £/$ etc - would be likely...

To WL-Solarize mine, cost nothing (except design and manufacture time by me...

Cheers
Terry

I have WL DayStar solar filters for my 10x50 Orion UltraView binos but they lack image stabilization. Image stabilization is a BIG plus at 10x or more for examining sunspots. You having a 12x set the image stabilization makes a big difference. I can use a tripod but that reduces portability.
