February 7th - New Snowlar Activity

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

The promised clearing of the past few days cloud and snow came to be mid morning today (Sunday) and with the new activity rotating onto the disk I cleaned the snow off the dome and setup to image. It was a bit windy but the dome sheltered the scope form the worst of it and it was running around -10C while I was out. The temps dropped and the wind picked up as the afternoon progressed, so the timing was good.

The first image is the disk/limb composite through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope and the ASI174MM camera:

The new activity and proms had me use the modded iStar 150mm, f8 double stacked scope to image these features in higher resolution. The ASI290MM camera was used at prime focus...about all the seeing would permit. The first image is the SE limb with the new region of activity and a nicely detailed prom nearby:

The disk had numerous small filaments as well:

The final images are of the SE prom:

It will be interesting to see if this emerging region develops into something more.

Take care everyone,
Brian

Very nice Brian! You got the plage on the SE limb which I never could see and the detail in those prominences is really nice.

And your tolerance to the cold is amazing. Does it ever cause issues with your blocking filters? Mine seems to be little affected by the cold but you get colder and stay colder longer than I do. I read somewhere recently that Lunt blocking filters are affected by cold worse than those of Coronado. That would explain why Lunt makes a heater for theirs and Meade Coronado does not.
