February 8 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:30am until 11:36am EST local time. Skies are partly to mostly cloudy. Seeing is average to maybe a bit below average. The temperature is 39F.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can easily see two filaments is DS. One just to the east of south-center looks double at first but a thin fainter part connects them. To the NE lies another easy filament. I also pick up a tiny filament SW of the double-bar filament. I am actually not sure whether it's truly a filament or a more prominent spicule cluster ( mottle ).

There is a wonderfully bright large prominence on the SE limb. To me it looks like an animal's head complete with a mouth, ears/horns and a dark eye. I also see another group on the opposite limb ( NW limb ) of the big prom. I can also see a few other small/fainter ones around the limb. I can see the thin spicule layer on the limb too.

The plage to a new AR in the SE is easily seen north of the big animal prom.

The mottles are visible without difficulty.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Atlair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 100x ( WL )
I can easily pick out the faculae of the new AR near the SE limb. I can also see two tiny pores within it! Otherwise only the fine granulation is visible but soft.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks James, I've read reports elsewhere of the new AR having a spot.

Thanks James for your report.

Nigella has mentioned about the S.E. AR having a spot - from reports. I have now acquired the latest SDO images and studied that area in the various lights and can see no sign of a spot as the latest attached SDO image shows.

I feel that judging by the proms previously coming from this area (prior to being over the horizon) that any proms have since disappeared - for now at least...

Without STEREO-B being operational, a certain amount of guess-work has to be assumed.

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
I just pulled these from the web. They are just a bit more current than the one I posted from my report. Should be current to now.

Ok James on that and certainly that does look like spots in that image and assuming the time of 12:22:39 of GMT/UTC/Z time could well account for the fact that SDO was down from the internet at that time - where i could not post a similar image...

Do we know where the image originated from ??

Thanks vm for the update

Terry
