2021-02-09 - A prominence in the snow
-10 degrees (Celsius) and a good bit of snow on the ground here today; but a nice and clear sky. Glad I made the choice to have my setup be remote-controllable (if that's even a word) a while back; so nice and cozy in my office with some tea
I was expecting conditions to be challenging, but after waiting for about 30 minutes and seeing nothing but mush on the screen; I figured something else must be going on. Then it occured to me that the Quark I'm using is relying on heat in order to get on band. Even though the green light was on; I suspected this might the culprit. A quick bit of tinkering to give it a thermal jacket (one of those things to keep a drinking container warm/cold and a bit of tape) and 10 minutes later everything was fine.
Seeing was quite bad, but tried to make the most of it (using the fleeting moments of acceptable seeing to get some quick captures in). There's quite a sizeable tower prom on the South Eastern limb; so that become the obvious target of attention.
Setup: 80ED, Quark Chromosphere, Baader 35nm H-Alpha filter, IMX174.
Thanks for looking!

What a gem! Thanks for reminding us it still exists! These east winds of late have been very cloudy!

That's a good shot Jochen in challenging conditions. These quarks are sensitive (understandably to be fair!) to extreme conditions. Think I would need a warm jacket on in that weather too

Thanks all.
Indeed, Mark. I don't think "lets put it in the snow and see what happens" is part of the manufacturer's testing procedure

And observing at 14F. That's cold! A warm remote site inside was smart! Still you had to go outside and wrap the Quark up.

Re: 2021-02-09 - A prominence in the snow
Thanks all.
James, I wanted to have the option to not have to be out in the elements when it's not all that pleasant. Even when dressing for it; sitting still at the telescope, it gets a bit much. And I'm sure I'll be glad I did it during the worst of the summer heat as well.
Still planning to get my dose of vitamin D whenever it's more enjoyable though.

Hi Jochen...
Very nice image of the prom, with lots of fine detail...well done
It looks like your session was about the same as mine yesterday as far as temperature goes.
