February 9th Session
Hi everyone...
I grabbed a few images over my lunch today, and was very happy to see the magnificent prom on the SE limb as well as the emerging AR and numerous filaments and small proms to add to the views. These are the first set I have managed to process.
First are the full disk images through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope and the ASI174MM camera; I setup the iStar 150mm, f8 double stack modded scope to image the activity using a 1.3x barlow with the ASI174MM camera. The best image of the lot is this shot of the eastern limb with the fila-prom, devolving AR and other proms/filaments: I will have to see if the balance of the images turn out...will post if there are more to show.
A few comments on the snow and winter observing. I do get out on days that are quite cold by most peoples standards, but I do have a few advantages to mitigate the cold. In my mind, the biggest salvation is that I am setup in an observatory so I am not standing cold cold/snow/slush covered ground and the observatory walls shelter much of the wind. Pre-observatory days I found that these two factors were the fist to make me cold. The other 'advantage' I have is that I grew up in this cold wintry weather and have warm coats, coveralls, and boots to use as needed.
Below is a pic of the dome today and another over the wall with the scopes and mount: As always, questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Nice set of images Brian - looks like you are in well into the cold with snow. Opposite to us down here in SE Australia (35°C today). Regards, John W.

Dan and John...
Thanks for your comments...much appreciated
John, certainly the opposite on the temperature scale...the 40+C temps in Australia is as foreign to me as -20's or colder to most that don't experience a cold winter. All what you are used to

Beautiful images Brian. You captured the Sun superbly. The big filaprom looks really detailed. And you make me sooo want an observatory!! With you it’s a must with all that cold weather and snow!

Thanks James, much appreciated
An observatory is huge benefit if you can set one up and have access to the sky you want, but trees and buildings make that a bigger issue for some. Not too bad if you only need to setup outside on few occasions.

Looks like a great session there, Brian.
Nice setup too. I can imagine being able to shelter a bit from the wind already makes a huge difference.

Truly excellent disks and mosaics, Brian. You capture so many detail in the mosaic and the filaprom. Your observatory set up is great. Changing subject, is it time for the first 2021 Zoom meeting ?

Re: February 9th Session
Stuart, Jochen, and Franco...
Thanks guys for your comments and feedback...always appreciated
The observatories are a huge blessing when it comes to being able to work without massive set and take down time. I a state of flux at the moment as I had the EM400 mount overloaded and moved the solar scopes back to the dome. The dome ID is almost too tight for comfort with the long refractor but I'll leave it until spring and decide if I build a larger observatory or make other changes...time will tell
Franco, I have been thinking a Zoom session was overdue too. Maybe others have enough interest to schedule one...just need a host
