February 11th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I had another short session to get some solar time in during the late morning today. The disk is still relatively quiet, but the non-AR is still showing nicely as well as numerous filaments and proms. The air temp was around -10C during the session and the seeing was not as good as I thought.

The first image is the full disk assembled from separate disk and limb exposures with the limb inverted. Imaged through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope and ASI174MM camera:
Full-Ha_02112021.jpg

I switched the camera to the modded iStar 150mm, f8 OTA fitted with a pair of DSII modules and B1800Ha blocker. A 3x focal extender was used ahead of the ASI174MM camera. I took a chance that this much amplification would be OK in the seeing, but I was rushed to finish to attend an online meeting and see I pushed it too much. Anyway, the images below show the results. The first is the SE quadrant in a mosaic and a single frame captured in 2x2 bin mode. This might have been a better capture method now that I see it ;)

The SW limb also had some activity as well, though not overly impressive:

There were also several hot spots and small filaments near the eastern limb, but the images are all mush form the seeing. Attempts to image the proms were equally a waste.

That covers all the images of note for today.

It seems this bad seeing scourge plagues us all. Your images look good though. Hopefully the upcoming weekend will bring you sunny skies and better seeing.

James, Franco, and Terry...

Many thanks to each for your comments and feedback...always appreciated :bow

James, the poor seeing seems to be a common thread in many of the observations posted lately...as is the cold and snow ;) Spring will be arriving before long and warm things up a bit too. Speaking of spring, I better spend some time at the sugar bush this weekend and do some prep-work for syrup season and repair some of the lines falling tree branches damaged in earlier wind storms.

Fantastic images Brian, you have been getting some super ones over the past week :bow :hamster: I don't know how you image at -10C, we have -4C here at the moment and the wind just freezes you to the bone in 5 minutes, I can't stand it. I have also been working outside this week and have come home frozen each day and the thought of being outside solar observing or nighttime observing fills me with dread. Hopefully the weather will warm up on Sunday and make everything much more bearable. Make sure you get the Maples in order, we need brave folks like you to supply our breakfast treats :hamster:

I am the same way, when I was younger I would observe a lot in temperatures below freezing. I would just bundle up undeterred. Now cold bothers me a lot more. Winter nighttime observing deters me much more than it used to. I remember back in the early 1980's us having one of the coldest nights here on record. -12 degrees Fahrenheit! I bundled up in multiple layers and went out behind my Coulter 10.1" dobsonian. It was after the passing of a strong cold front there was a breeze and snow was on the ground. I was forced in by the cold after two hours. My feet were cold, my hands had gotten cold and ice had formed from my breath on the hood of my parka. The parka worn over my insulated coveralls had kept my body warm but my insulated boots were not quite enough I guess. I made the mistake of pulling my heavy gloves off briefly to change an eyepiece and that's what did my hands in. We have had nothing to rival that cold in many years. We got down to -1F about 7 years ago and that is the first time my immediate area had dropped below 0 in years. Global warming is having an effect my friends. Single digits above are now considered really cold here.

The coldest I have observed solar is 23F. How cold is -12F in Celsius?

I nighttime observe now mostly in warmer weather.

Alexandra, Mark and James...

Thanks so much for the comments and feedback that you each posted. Always appreciated :bow

Alexandra, I'd be frozen too (even with the winter clothes) if I were out in the open and dealing with the wind. The observatory walls shelter the wind and the floor is cold, but better than cold, wet ground.

James, let's see...-12F is COLD in Celsius ;), but to put a value to it it converts to -24.doesn't matter  The coldest day I did any solar work was one morning last winter and it was -26C if I remember correctly. The coldest night I ever ventured out was one night in late January 20+ years ago for a total lunar eclipse. It was soon after we moved the present location and the observatory hadn't been in use for long. It was -39C (-38F), and in the days of film cameras I had to be out in the open to manually take pictures with the 35mm camera. I remember this night in particular because the roof became lodged while open (ice/differential contraction/??) and and my attempts to winch it closed resulted in the aircraft cable that moves it snapped in the cold. So here it's 2am in the cold with all the equipment exposed to the elements (blowing snow was picking up in the wind and falling inside). Quite a sight in the wee hours of the morning with me out using a sledge hammer and pry bar to try and get the roof freed up and closed before more snow accumulated inside. I did get it closed though

To be fair, the big observatory has a 'warmish' room to keep you conformable enough on the cold winter nights and now that most everything at the scope is controlled through the PC I only need to get cold for brief periods of time. -18C last night while doing some deep sky work and fellow club members who were in on Zoom observing session all quit in short order. The dome with the solar gear is has no warm room but the wind is blocked and usually feels decent with sun shining in.

That low is a record and not the norm by any means...if it was the number of observations might not hold up as well
