Solar observation with two old (XIX/early XX century) refractors

Post by pedro »

Solar observation with two old (XIX/early XX century) refractors

I used two of my old refractors to observe the Sun today

Watsons & Sons 3" F/13 alt-azimuth refractor
Fullerscopes 4" F/15 refractor

A BROADHURST & CLARKSON Herschel Wedge was used together with a RAS neutral density filter. Solar photosphere features were easily seen, good contrast and definition. Check out a few images below. More at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/pedro_re/

Hi Pedro,

Nice old telescopes. I assume the diagonal where it says Sun is a wedge.

Beautiful classic scopes Pedro. You answered here the question I posted on your earlier post. White light it is. With a Herschel wedge.

Beautifull refractors !!

BTW, Pedro I was wondering whether you could put a SSM on top of the water tower we see in the background ? It would be interesting to know the difference of seeing between ground level and up there (8 m high ?).

BC&F did very nice brass refactors, I had many visits to BC&F at Telescope House in Farringdon Road, London and knew Dudley Fuller, not well but as a customer and had a number chats over the years, my last visit to the shop was back in 2004 when I picked up an old Vixen SP mount which I used for a number of years, there was still a big big Brass Refractor on display in the window, Sadly BC&F as a shop no longer exists

It was a wonderful telescope emporium great memories

Thanks Rich

I also talked to D. Fuller several times over the years when I was in London. The shop (Telescope House) in Farringdon Road was great

best regards
