Computer help required Please-SOLVED...Phew
I bought a new laptop and everything is up and running for image capture and processing, but I have an issue with my video icons when I open my video folder, which are just showing as generic SER and AVI icons. On my previous laptop the icons showed as proper image thumbnails of the object I'd just imaged, which is handy when trying to select files for processing.
This is what I'm currently seeing:
I have an SER player app, so when I click on the SER icons they open and play the video file okay, but unless I do that I don't know the content of the file before opening it.
I think I've exhausted every tab option to try to resolve this It's so annoying as my previous laptop had no issues here and everything is apparently identical (windows 10, Genika Astro, SER and AVIs etc etc.....).
I'm sure it's an easy fix, but I cannot find the solution. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks.
Stu.

Re: Computer help required Please
Hi Stu
Try clearing the thumbnail cache (Windows will rebuild it automatically) and see what happens. Maybe it's simply a corrupted cache file. See link below on how to do that.

Stu,
have you checked via File Explorer -> Options-> Change Folder and Search Options -> View
Always show icons, never thumbnails should be unticked

Re: Computer help required Please
Stu,
probably you tried, but another possible cause can be found this way:
open explorer
right click on 'this Computer"
properties
advanced system settings
visual effects
check if Microsoft has decided that your computer can handle "show thumbnails instead of icons"
P.
If this does not help, don't know any more tricks ...

Re: Computer help required Please
Many thanks, Paul.
This box is checked, so I assume this is okay.
This morning I compared my previous laptop against my new one to see if I could find any settings that are different. The only thing I've found so far is that on my old laptop when I right click on a thumbnail, the panel that opens shows an 'Edit SER File' option.
On my new laptop, when I right click on the file icon the same panel pops up, but it does not display this option.
Is this a clue? I'll see if there's anything that should be 'set' in the SER player, but I couldn't see anything obvious when I looked at this yesterday.

Re: Computer help required Please-SOLVED...Phew
Thank you for taking the time to consider this issue and offering suggestions, everyone. I really appreciate it.
In the vein of 'reboot and restart' I re-installed the SER player from scratch and .....it now works! All SER file icons are now shown as thumbnails. Something must have gone screwy the first time. Maybe I didn't install the component that makes the change. I don't know, but now it works, which is the main thing. Happy days....
Cheers

Re: Computer help required Please-SOLVED...Phew
Glad you got this sorted Stu, was late to the party on this one.
For anyone wanting to know why, it has to do with container registration. So when prompted if you want to associate specific file types (.SER for example) to a particular piece of software (SER player) it will then be able to automate opening with that software and provide a preview in your folder views after registration and association is complete. If this prompt is negated, you can do it manually, by right clicking on a SER file and click the "open with" tab, then select the SER player (manually, it may not appear in the default list of option) and check the "always open..." option and it will then associate the container type to the software and provide previews instantly from that point on with a refresh.
Very best,
