March 5 2021 Observations. White Light, GONG and SDO.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is intermittent between 11:00am and 1:40pm EST local time. The skies are overcast by a thin but murky layer of clouds. Seeing is rough. The temperature is 52F.

I did not attempt hydrogen-alpha through the murk but stayed with higher contrast white light.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
While the SDO continuum image shows a small number of tiny pores with AR12806 and AR12807 I could not see any of them visually. I could only barely hint the faculae to AR12806 and the solar granulation.

SDOAIA304, AIA1600 and GONG Big Bear Ha.
While the clouds inhibited my solar observations in Ha and reduced my observations in white light I noticed a surge prominence on the SDO images. It's possibly flare related and I followed it on the SDO and GONG images. It rose and fell back within an hour or so. It was on the NE limb.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks Maurits and Jochen and yes Jochen it wasn't a good observing day for me. I would have liked to have gotten the SMII90 on that NE active area and seen it " live " but I am thankful that I could access the SDO for a look.

And Marty you got an excellent animation of it and it even shows up in your CaK image. I cropped a tiny section of it to post here if you don't mind. I wanted to compare it to the AIA1600 image.

Nice report James, looks like the area that has rounded the limb is visible as plage, can't tell if there are spots yet. Clear skies here before dawn, let's hope they hang around for a while today!

Thanks Mark, I hope to get it tomorrow but the weather doesn't look that great. Sunday is looking pretty good though.

Here is a view from the SDO of the surge eruption in the NE using the AIA instrument at the 304nm wavelength.

That really is a cracking new active region that you spotted and Marty imaged, just a pity you didn't get the 90mm out :( never mind, there will be many more I am sure :)

I did catch it's associated plage in the 60mm today and it's faculae in the 70mm.
