My first stacked image.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Up to now all of my images using the ZWO ASI178MM monochrome camera have been still images acquired through SharpCap and edited in GIMP. On February 20th I saved an AVI movie of some prominences on the laptop to try to stack later. Tonight I tried it for the first time. SharpCap was used in acquisition, AviStack in stacking and editing and GIMP to adjust contrast and add color. AviStack seems straightforward to use and not difficult. The movie had just over 250 frames and I used 22 percent of them. Before stacking I examined the movie and the seeing sucked that day. I knew I would not be able to use a lot of them. Today I learned about things like frame alignment, reference point alignment and sharpening using wavelets. Even after all of this I was disappointed with the outcome. It's no better than my stills! I went back and did it a second time with the same results. It still might be me but maybe the seeing was so bad there were few if any sharp frames there!? Anyway, one thing is for sure. I will keep trying. Practice makes perfect they say.

And thank you Rainer for suggesting AviStack to me!

James

That's not a bad result James. You just need practice and you will see your images improve.

Hi James,
I've had the same problems in the past, where single frames seem as good as stacked files, but I'm sure as others have said here that more practice will result in better results.

Best Wishes
Terry

Hi James,

Well done. Well with time you will start to recognize more and more. BTW the featherlike prominence has fine structure as far as I can see.

In an image like that with just a couple of details = prominence one can be easily fooled about being the result the same as in a single image.

As other said with time you will start to see the difference.

Wait until you do some surface details.

Good to hear you liked AviStack and did not find it complicated. Finally we are two from maybe thousands and thousands of users not using AviStack

Don't be so hard on yourself. Aesthetically speaking, that's a nice image. :bow
We are all at the mercy of the seeing conditions and learning to use our kit to best effect.

As others have said: Practice, practice and practice some more.
If everybody could do everything perfectly, from scratch, we'd have nobody's work to admire.
Nor have an impossibly high bar to aim for. Our hobby would not exist.
The hunger for improvement is an excellent driving force. ;)

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! It matters and helps me move forward. I have more screenshots and Avi captures to do tonight and post asap if any are good. I was plagued badly today by poor seeing and windy conditions even though I had clear skies.

Keep 'em coming, they look good! I've never used avistack, I also use autostakkert to stack and then imppg for sharpening. And on those days where seeing isn't great, I often end up thinking the same, that my stacked and sharpened image doesnt look much better than the live view or still frames, so you aren't alone in that. I've also had days where seeing wasn't great and so it was almost impossible to be sure I'd nailed the focus, so I've had images that were just plain out of focus as well. But the fine structures are definitlely there, your inverted/negative image really shows that well. Also love the coloring, a good fiery feel to it:)

Fine result, James, very sharp indeed.

Me too started by using of Avistack but now I much prefer Autostakkert. Try both, James, don't stick to one only.

hello,

the result is already very nice :)

a few thoughts anyway:

- don't record in AVI but in SER

- Avistack is old ... and not compatible with SER (it seems to me).
Autostackkert 3 is a good choice for the treatment of prominences.

- for wavelets (much better than the AS!3 sharpen), use either registax (5 or 6) or, better ;) astrosurface ( http://astrosurface.com/pageuk.html ).

Sincerely,
stéphane

You are really doing great James :hamster:

I used to use Avistack 10 years ago as it was much better than Registax, then Autostakkert came along and did the same job at 90% faster and much simpler. The trials we had at the time showed very little difference between the two apart from the huge amount of time saving. I tied to use Avistack recently but I can't even get it to open on my Windows 10 machine ;)

We all have our favourites, you will have to try everything and see what you settle in for your routine. Never use sharpening in Autostakkert though, only use ImPPG.

Thanks for the advice Alexandra. I will try AutoStakkert and ImPPG. As I am just starting out it will take me time to figure out what piece of software I prefer the most.

Time does matter. I don't wanna spend a large amount of time processing images.

I have tried wavelets in AviStack but I have to learn how it works for it to benefit me. Most of my sharpening work to date has been done in GIMP. AviStack itself doen't seem hard to use.

Most of my processing in done on a Windows 7 desktop which runs AviStack fine.

Hi Alexandra,
I tied to use Avistack recently but I can't even get it to open on my Windows 10 machine ...
That is strange. I also have Windows 10 Pro and AviStack 2.0 64 bit opens troublefree and not even necessary to set up any compatibility option ...

Just downloaded AutoStakkert to take a look at it and I must be very dense. I can Open my SER file, I can Analyse my frames but then ZERO, Stack field does not get out of the grey status ...

Great results James, you don't have to spend too much time processing. You can use batch stacking in AS3 and with IMPPG you can save pre-sets and batch process your images. It's the same with Photoshop, with GIMP you can run scripts.

Hi James, exactly as Alexandra has said as :-

" I used to use Avistack 10 years ago as it was much better than Registax, then Autostakkert came along and did the same job at 90% faster and much simpler. The trials we had at the time showed very little difference between the two apart from the huge amount of time saving. Alexandra "

I have failed to get AVI Stack to work and Registax is apparently more for Deep Sky usage, whereas as AutoStakkert v.2 and 3 are excellent for Solar, along with SharpCap with my cameras. FireCapture is installed recently, but I've yet to get to grips with that more complicated program, so can't confirm if it is better than SharpCap for my purposes.

Again as Alexandra says, using the favourite program after trying all available programs for whatever PC-platform is used, is the only way forward and also I would never try sharpening in AutoStakkert, rather that tool is for the final processing stage in either PaintShopPro, Photoishop, ImPPG or any other final/post-processing program - as can usually be edited back to the previous screen-view, if overdone and/or disliked...

Cheers
Terry
