Extra large prom 20210330 from London!

Post by Radon86 »

Dear SCF friends,

Here is my processed image from my Quark Chromosphere on a 70mm ED refractor. Taken with ASI120mm-S camera on morning of 30th March 2021 from London. I did not get the correct flat frames unfortunately, so I have had a fewer number of prom frames to process. I combined a prom exposure and a limb exposure which also had prom detail, but I masked this out to show the prom exposure.

The images are reduced in size for display on the forum. Newton Rings were removed by ImagesJ in post processing.

I am reasonably pleased, just wonder if I could get more detail, or do I have to upgrade my camera and work on the resolution/sampling to maximise.
Any advice would be welcome ! I am preparing a 90mm telescope, and a better camera.

I think I did not process the proms to the full, as I concentrated on the disc. The proms are what came out of the stacking.

I can't comment on the ASI120mm-S camera on you scope Magnus, but the image in either colour is fine.

Perhaps and hopefully your next trial with another scope and camera - will produce some interesting results.

Thanks Terry for your thumbs up ! :bow2

I think its the technical side of imaging, with poor seeing over rooftops in a suburb. Also the focusing and moving the telescope around the sun with a small sensor. I will get a bigger sensor and upgrade my imaging. More practice and getting the FLATS, tilting/interference eliminator.

Nice shots Magnus, I think they're pretty much in line with what you would expect with a 70mm scope, Quark and the 120. You'll get more detail with the 90mm seeing allowing. The other route you could explore (I'm assuming the scope is 70mm/f6?) - stop the scope down to 60mm which will give you more contrast from the Quark, if you are suffering from bad seeing you might find this offers the best route.

Nice results Magnus - I’m another London-based solar enthusiast, just waiting to take delivery of my first camera. Will look out for your images in future.

Thank you Alexandra for your compliment. :bow

It is only 2 years since I got the Quark, but most of that time, I had not been imaging, mostly due to weather and other technical hurdles. After some blocks, I can see a sunnier outlook !

Thanks everyone on Solarchat for their support and advice, and constructive advice.

Thank you Mark! :bow

Yes, I have given this issue some thought. I agree that the seeing in London will be a problem, so I am working on a solution to the Solar scintillation monitor. I will also work on an aperture mask to stop my scope down to 60mm.
I could not find a solution to the focal reducer problem with the ASI120mm-S. Sooner or later I will buy a new camera, but wanted to see what I would see using a focal reducer. I could not find focus with the 1.25 inch 0.5x focal reducers from eBay. I did see a post in stargazers forum which I will look into, and get an adaptor or the C-mount version of the 0.5x focal reducer which fits directly into the C-mount holding on the camera body itself infront of the sensor.

By the way, I have found your website really helpful, especially the video tutorials, and the unsharp masking/smart sharpen advice. I hope you can perhaps update your tutorials to include imppg tutorials and major updates to your workflow.
