2021-04-22 - A few quick FD's (HA/CaK)

Post by JochenM »

We've been having some nice weather here the last few days (fairly warm for the time of year), but no luck with clear enough skies. Until late afternoon today. I had just finished work, so perfect timing!

I figured the seeing would most likely not support any higher res work; so decided on some FD's (which I hadn't done in a while anyway). Quite happy with the outcome (and to be outside in a t-shirt :) ).

Setup:

HA: Lunt LS50, IMX178
CaK: 80ED (stopped down to 60mm), Lunt CaK b1800, IMX178

Thanks for looking.

These looks really nice Jochen. Really nice contrast on the Ha image.

Hi Jochen,

Very nice, thank you for posting. :hamster:

I am thinking of buying a Lunt LS50. Which version do you have ? Double stack and which size blocking filter ?
Any problems with gradients or Newton Rings. A member of my astronomy club has had problems with gradients across the sun and also Newton rings or interference bands.

Many thanks.
Magnus.

Thanks guys.

Magnus, I have the b600 single stack. Never had any newton rings issue with it. It does produce an interference pattern in combination with IMX178 chipset cameras (which is the ideal fit for this scope). However, these are my personal observations on that:

1) It only seems to occur when seeing is quite poor. I generally don't bother imaging at all anymore in those conditions and as such haven't encountered the issue in ages.

2) If it does happen, it's quite easy to fix and eliminate the pattern completely:
- Keep the exposure down a bit. Instead of exposing the histogram to the right (90% or so) which is fairly common for HA imaging; keep it down to 60-
70%. Brighten it up a bit in post-processing if that's your preferred style.
- Any minor pattern that still survives the above can be removed completely by applying an artificial flat (or a real flat if you're not lazy like me :) ).

Thanks Jochen, that is really helpful.

Hope to have a Lunt LS50 or LS60 soon.

Magnus
