22 April: AR 12816 / 12818 in H-alpha and CaII-K.

Post by p_zetner »

Hi Everyone.

Managed to capture some higher resolution images of the two beautiful active regions. The H-alpha images were shot at approximately f/27 with the C8 Edge while the Ca-K images were shot at an outrageously high ~f/55 with my Stellarvue 115mm APO refractor. I had been playing with some high magnification optics configurations during my last Ca imaging session (last year) and forgot to reconfigure to more "normal" values before yesterday's session! Oh well, the results aren't horrible but do lack some sharpness and I would have preferred a more expansive image scale.

Mark: You asked me, in a previous post, about collimating my C8. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't collimated since I bought it a few years ago! It's high time I check it out. Also, you asked me about image shift during focusing. I don't use the mirror adjustment for focusing but have a Moonlite rack and pinion attached. Very smooth focusing.

Cheers.
Peter

Thanks, Ivan.
It’s my favourite as well because the AR is beautifully complex and because it was imaged at the beginning of the session when there seemed to be more frequent intervals of reasonable seeing.
Cheers.

Cracking Ca II K images, Peter. Very nice indeed. As you say, AR12816 is quite a complex system.

A great set, Peter. That 115mm APO rocks.

Thank you all for the generous comments! Still waiting for an “excellent seeing” prediction from Astrospheric to try to nail the high resolution imaging.

Franco: The Stellarvue 115mm f7 is a great refractor. I love it for nighttime visual sessions which I can do at a less light polluted location. I would like to switch over Ca imaging to my Istar 100mm f12 and will test that out hopefully this summer.

Cheers.
Peter

Super shots Peter, a 115/7 is on my (long) wish list of scopes. It's surprising how much the f-ratio can be pushed with CaK.

Reason I asked about collimation is I tried my HaT the other day when was clear and the view was awful, i'm thinking I need to collimate mine too. I have dawg awful image shift with it when focusing so will look to use my Moonlite focuser on it instead.
