Quick Ar12818 CaK - 24th April
Been far too busy for the last week - making the most of the last of the Easter holidays, and then back into work at 100 miles an hour has meant just not having the time I like to get on here and see everyones images. Needless to say I was pleased the weekend had arrived... Today was forecast to be clear skies, however i'm often in disagreement and my own forecast was for haze and high cloud, and this is what I got. I managed to get a quick look before the 'soup of the sky' was just too thick to do anything.
I was keen to try out my new ZWO290mm, which i'd bought specifically for CaK, my theory being those small pixels do away with a barlow for image amplification and overall there is more light for the system. Initial results (and was playing around last week with the travelling kit with it) suggest it is quite a sensitive camera in CaK and holds much promise. Seeing wasn't great this morning and I optimistically started off at 120mm aperture, this was mush on the screen so started to stop down. I have a series of stop rings from 120mm all the way down to 40mm for the 127/1200, and when you hit the right aperture stop for the conditions it's really obvious and the view snaps to focus. DEspite the haze today softening things up quite a bit, i'm pleased with this result. Works out 90mm f40 with the 290mm, very much an oversampled image, but it shows potential, the fibrils in the penumbra are just starting to resolve.

Running this system at 120mm when seeing allows would give me f30, and quite a decent step up in resolution. Hoping the cloud / haze band passes over later in the afternoon so I can see what's going o in Ha, the sun is picking up in activity nicely. Hoping tomorrow morning offers better!

Thanks Terry, hoping the milky white haze I have right now will clear soon so I can get a second round of images in today.

It does look from the weather-satellite imagery that the Sun is burning-off some of that haze layer in your area and hopefully you get the very-clear views soon...

Lovely capture Mark, seeing was bad here again. Not processed any yet but expecting the worst. I'm going to have to build a series of aperture masks. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone, stopdown rings rescue many an image when the conditions don't support the native aperture.

This is the only other usable image I got from today; haze didn't clear till late afternoon, by which time the seeing was absolutely sh!te... Taken wit a Lunt 50 etalon, cemax 2x barlow and the ASI290m camera.

Re: Quick Ar12818 CaK - 24th April
Yes that's right James and only a few hours ago was quite different.
So this new-set near AR2818 is apparently AR2020 and looking very impressive as it has grown so much.
In fact with the close proximity to AR2818 and 2020 consisting with as many as 11-spots, I wouldn't be at all surprised if a massive flare/CME might occur sooner or later...
And of course Mark, some more extra excellent captures...
Regards
Terry

Re: Quick Ar12818 CaK - 24th April
I saw not a trace of AR12820 in yesterday's session. Only the single spot of AR12818 nearby. Change rapidly the Sun does....

That came out great, Mark.
The ASI290MM has been my go to for CaK closeups for a while as well, works very well (and the high framerate also doesn't hurt).

Re: Quick Ar12818 CaK - 24th April
Thanks Jochen, I agree, i'm very impressed with it so far.
I also found a CaK FD I took, 50mm f20, a bit soft, I think 40mm f20 would have worked better but i'll take this given the soup I was trying to work in yesterday afternoon...

Re: Quick Ar12818 CaK - 24th April
The first Ca K image has a lot of potential. It will be great when seeing cooperates.
For FD images, 40 to 50 mm aperture is probably close to the optimal given the sensor size.
Processing is perfect !
