April 25 2021 Observations.
Today I had planned an observing/imaging session using the SMII90 and AstroTech AT72EDII refractors but plans came up preventing me from doing a lengthy session so I ended up doing visual with the SMII60 and Orion 70. Oh well...
Session time is 10:00am until 10:45am EDT local time ( US ). Skies are partly cloudy. Seeing is below average. Breezy. The temperature is 53F.
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
Though magnetically distinct, ARs 12818 and 12820 appear visually as a single connected group. The patchy elongated plage stretches slightly diagonally east-west. I can see three spots in it in Ha easily. A fourth is difficult in the westernmost part of the complex. I can see a small filament next to the 4th one.
I can see the plages to AR12816 in the SW and AR12819 in the NW. AR12816 has an easy filament SW of it.
Elsewhere on the disc I can see four filaments south of the AR12818-20 complex. A long one in the far south is very easy. I can actually see some detail within it in the form of mottling and striations! I can see another small filament in the far SW and another NE of AR12819 in the NW. With me resetting the tuning knob on the internal etalon last week the 60 is certainly doing better. It can see almost all of what GONG shows today!
I can see 5 proms in DS and 8 in SS. One small bright one in the SW, Four in the NW with the lower of these showing extensions in SS leading to the small proms on either side of the bigger one. The northernmost one shows some detail. I see a fairly large prom showing some striations in the NE with a faint one below it only being visible in SS. The SE shows what appears to be a loop prom in DS but in SS that look is destroyed when fainter detail comes into view.
The mottling is easy today. I tried for the spicule layer but the seeing is not quite good enough to allow me to see it.
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see a combined 15 spots/pores in the AR12818-20 complex(s). Two show clear penumbrae. I can see no spots or pores in either AR12816 or AR12819. I got the faculae to AR12816 but the clouds obscured the sun before I could try for the one for AR12819.
I can only glimpse the granulation today.
Carpe Diem!
James
P.S. The Sun came from behind the clouds while I was preparing to go in and I got the faint faculae to AR12819 in the NW using the Orion70.

Thanks for the report and photos.

Re: April 25 2021 Observations.
An excellent report James and yes indeed so many spots in that region is a little unusual.
Such activity could cause some more explosive-activity !!
Too-clouded out here for most of the time...
Thanks for your effort.
Regards
Terry

Re: April 25 2021 Observations.
Thanks James and the previous comment about an explosion is not far off the truth as now AR2821 has been added to the numerous spots of the 2818/2820 region !!!

Re: April 25 2021 Observations.
Terry,
I don't see an AR12821 listed on SpaceWeather. I checked SolarMonitor but it's reading " No Data ".

Re: April 25 2021 Observations.
Aha!! Didn't know that. The beginning of it would have been visible today when I observed. Does the magnetogram verify it? It appears so.

Re: April 25 2021 Observations.
Yes for some time, spaceweather.com has been very late/24-hours out of date, so don't really use that until they get better. In fact I suspect that they actually view SolarChat and grab some info from us, which is fine as far as I am concerned...
I can't verify about the magnetogram imaging system..
Good night for now
