April 2021 Highlights

Post by Carbon60 »

April has been so very dry and mostly sunny for much of the UK giving plenty of opportunities for solar imaging (especially when semi-retired) :) . I've collated some of the highlights from the month from my perspective using images captured mainly in Ha and Ca II K.

Actually, this one is from the last day of March (as a lead in to April ;) )which shows a beautiful prom in the north-west:

Image20210330_Ha_Prom_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

We had another fine set of proms on April 10th and the appearance of AR12814:

Image20210410_Ha_FD_Proms_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

Here's the same active region on a full disk in Ca II K imaged on April 11th:

Image20210411_CaK_FD_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

...and here on the 13th in Ha together with an image of a super long prominence (inset).

The conditions were sufficient to enable me to capture a closer view of AR12814 using my 150 mm/DS Lunt 35 mod on a Basler acA1920-155 um with 2.5x PowerMate:

Image20210413_Ha_AR12814_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

A few days later on the 19th a new arrival, AR12816 was putting on a good show, which I managed to capture in 3-lights:

Image20210419_Sun in Ha_AR12816_Three Lights_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

This region of magnetic activity soon started to produce a string of small flares, one of which I managed to capture on my 150.

Image20210422_AR12816_Flare_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

In the meantime we had another fine set of prominences:

Image20210419_Sun in Ha_Prominence Study_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

...and on April 25th a fairly active Sun with multiple active regions, filaments and prominences giving us a tantalising glimpse of what we can expect as cycle 25 develops further:

Image20210425_Sun in Ha_Stuart Green by Stuart Green, on Flickr

Finally a view in Ca II K from this morning as the remaining active regions begin to approach the western limb.

Let's hope for more sunny days for everyone.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Wow, lot's of great work. Is the 150mm refractor you mention a mod of a Lunt? Do you have a reference post for that scope? What's a Lunt 60 triple stack? Were the high-resolution CaK and white light also done at 150mm aperture?

Summing up is great. This is a scientific approach and an excellent basis for a presentation at the end of the year.

Many thanks, everyone. Much appreciated. It’s a pity the weather has turned for the worse. Still, the garden needs the rain, so it’s not all bad. :)

Superb presentation Stu, it's nice to be reminded of what a good month we had for Solar Imaging.

Lovely to see April's summary. A lot of work but worth it Stu. I should really do this, but getting time to even process my data is something else. I've days of backlog, lol. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Many thanks, everyone.

I tend to create these montages regularly, shortly after creating the original images, and then upload them to the British Astronomical Association website. It only takes a few minutes using MS Paint and a bit of cutting and pasting. :)

A very good summary for April came out, a lot of work has been done, but it's worth it.
