May 1 2021 Observations.
Session time is 10:21am to 11:09am EDT local time ( US ). Clear skies with good seeing. The temperature is 61F.
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 33x and 50x ( Ha )
I first off got nine filaments, most of these in a belt above the south polar region in the southern hemisphere. The only filaments I can see in the north is a difficult one near the NW limb and a very tiny one associated with a difficult plage approaching the the central longitudinal meridian. It took some effort to see this plage and filament. Good seeing helped here!
I can see the disappearing complex of AR12818-20-21 in the SW. It's straddling the limb now. A low prominence marks it's location on the limb. I can see a brighter prominence to it's south and a couple of small ones on the SE limb. GONG and SDOAIA304 show a large but very faint prom on the NE limb. I cannot see it visually with the SMII60. If I had time I would set the SMII90 up, it would stand a better chance. This one would be better imaged.
The mottles are easily seen today and at 50x in SS I can see the limb spicule layer though it is not exactly obvious.
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 41.5x, 62.5x, 100x ( WL )
The active region complex of AR12818-20-21 is the main object(s) of interest in white light. The faculae is easily seen with the brightest patch running SE-NW in a bar near the limb. At 100x I can see a tiny pore at the northern end of this patch. In another more spread out patch of faculae slightly to the NE there is a much easier spot at it's northern end making a total of two visible.
The solar disc outside of this SW AR complex is very calm with no spots or anything of significance visible. The fine solar granulation can be seen.
Happy May Day, or as it was known in ancient Ireland. Beltane. Light the bonfires and seize the beer! Celebrate the height of the Sun!

Re: May 1 2021 Observations.
Thanks James, a nice report, glad you got some May day sunshine. Started off lovely and clear here with quite a frost. Just got a 2 hour imaging session in, only stopped by running out of hard drive space. Fluffy clouds bubbling up now but is still nice and warm. Just processing away with a coffee with lamb slow cooking in the oven for later. All good!

Re: May 1 2021 Observations.
Excellent observations James I managed a quick look in between showers on Saturday and I thought the polar crown filaments were the best part of the show.
Mark, we had a lovely walk down the Trent and Mersey canal this morning as the weather forecast was cloud all day. The Sun popped out and stayed out all morning, so much for the forecast!.. We saw loads of birds, it was one of my best birding walks for a long time. Lots of Reed warblers and Reed Buntings and even heard a Cetti's warbler twice which is a amazing as I didn't think they had reached Cheshire yet. I hope you enjoy your canal weekend.

Re: May 1 2021 Observations.
Thanks everyone!
Ella, I am glad you got a session in.
Mark, we had our last frost about 5 days or so ago. AVI files do take up a lot of space, that is for sure. I hope you enjoyed your coffee and get a beer before bedtime. You should try fishing too!
Alexandra, I always enjoy hearing the birds when I observe, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Robins, Pileated Woodpeckers, etc. I bet your canals are alive with birdsong.
I had a cloudy day today. No observations from me today.
James

Re: May 1 2021 Observations.
We saw lots of birds this weekend, if i'm not looking at the sun i'm either watching the birds or planes with the knockers. Saw a few didn't know what they were, or have seen before, so will be getting the book out later on to try and identify.Montana wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 12:12 pm Mark, we had a lovely walk down the Trent and Mersey canal this morning as the weather forecast was cloud all day. Re: May 1 2021 Observations.
I also took out my new mobile solar viewing equipment (60mm guidescope and Quark Chromosphere, stopped down to 32mm). It was clear around the horizone in the east for a few hours, so I took out my scope.
The features as described by James could be seen clearly, very satisfied so far with the Quark/60mm guidescope.

Years ago I used to get into watching planes with the old Traq 60mm frac. Back in the 1980's I knew most of the civilian types of the time and seen many military ones. B-52s, F-15, F-16, F-4, F-14. I even caught an F117 Nighthawk once. Today I still haven't seen an F22, F-35 or B-2 but I don't watch the skies for planes near as often as I once did.
