May 5 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 11::04am until 12:08pm EDT local time ( US ). The skies are mostly clear. The seeing is fair. The temperature is 72F.

I had thought about setting the SMII90 up but the slow amount of activity on the sun did not warrant me setting the bigger, heavier instrument up so I used the much easier grab and go SMII60.

Coronado Solarmax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
The easiest thing to see on the disc is three filaments in the far southwest followed by a double-plage in the SE. The three filaments are fairly dark and easy to see against the mottled disc. The plage shows two sections oriented east-west. I can see a tiny thin filament just north of a line drawn between the filaments in the SW and the plage(s) in the SE. The only other filament I see on the disc is in the NE and it takes a close look and fine tuning to see.

I can see nearly every prominence shown on the GONG Big Bear Ha image. The most noticeable being on the far SW limb near the filaments. A filament that appears bright on the GONG BB image in the east is hard for me to see visually. Nearly absent. Change happens fast I guess.

The mottles are easily seen today.

Orion 70mm Solar telescope. 25x, 41.5x, 62.5x ( WL )
The sun is overall very bland today. I can see a double-faculae in the SE mirroring the Ha plage located there. I can see no pores or spots within it. The fine granulation covers the solar disc.

Carpe Diem!

James

Great to hear James :hamster: sometimes it good to just get the quick scope out for a look. I never understand why folks sell their starter scope for a bigger aperture, I have never ever wanted to sell my PSTs even though I own a Solarscope, they come in so handy in winter and quick visuals and also outreach where a big heavy large aperture scope is useless.

That last image was of course 2 days old, so the latest of today is now correctly attached. :hamster:

Thanks for your input everyone!

Alexandra,
I have found out long ago that the more portable and easy set-up scopes are the most used. The 90 will out perform the 60 but despite that the 60 is used more. Because of easier set up and portability. The Orion70 white light scope is the same way. Small and very light. Half the weight of the AT72EDII and wedge and MUCH lighter/smaller than the wedge C102 combo.

Thanks for the update Terry.

That is a really pretty solar halo, Ella.
