May 8 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:00am until 10:38am EDT local time ( US ). The skies are partly cloudy. Seeing is good. The temperature is 61F.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 33x, 50x and 66.5x ( Ha )
I can see two plages on the solar disc. The newly numbered AR12822 in the NE is bright and easy to see. Within the plage I can see three spots. I can also see another plage in the SE approaching the LCM. It shows an east-west bipolar form and has thin filaments located south and west of it. I can also see a filament in the far SE and another in the SW near the limb. I also see a couple of filaments in the NE.

I can see a bright prom in the SW and another in the SE that is largely un-attached to the disc. The lifted off part is housetop shaped. I also see a small one on the NW limb and a tall " sprite " on the NE limb.

The mottles show nice contrast today and at higher powers ( 50x and 66.5x ) I can see the limb spicule layer.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 41.5x, 50x 62.5x and 100x ( WL )
I can see 6 spots/pores in AR12822 in the NE. The faculae is easy to see also. The large northernmost spot shows an elongated umbra within a well formed penumbra. I tried for polar faculae but could not see them. The C102 with the wedge would probably win out here! I can see the fine granulation of the photosphere but here a wedge equipped scope would show them better. Though the filter does decent a solar wedge exceeds it in contrast and detail and that makes a difference on stuff like faculae and granulation. It makes them easier to see!

I see no other spots/pores on the disc.

Carpe Diem!

James
