Catchup From 7th May

Post by marktownley »

Lifes got all busy again, meaning i'm on catch up with the solar images. After my first trial of the dawn setup on the eastern side of the house when wrong, managed to cut my usb cable in half that feeds the Quark, and battery was flat, some cable deliveries later and a recharge of the batteries, and I was out again at 6am on the morning of the 7th.

I'm still not free from bugs, take a look at the full disk, the left hand edge is out of focus compared to the right, i've been getting this for sometime now and have been puzzling it's origins...

Process of deduction tells made me think the Baader 0.7x solar telescompressor was the culprit, as the images below show no sign of this...

Some exploring of connections etc and this theory was kinda right, it seems the eyepeice holder ever so slightly tilts the nose of the camera, and maybe because of the effects of the telecompressor this is really quite amplified as a throw in focus. Anyhow, i've rigged another solution that should keep things orthogonal and, fingers crossed, the next time i'm able to get out an image the focus problem should be gone!

Shots were taken with a 50mm front mounted Lunt etalon double stacked with a Quark.

Hope you like!

Mark

Yes the filaprom certainly has come-out very-well Mark and your exacting-eye has certainly shown the slight out-of-focus issue.

But (and there's gotta be a But), was it difficult and why on Earth would you want to cut the USB cable ?????!!!!!?????

Well done though and getting other things sorted.

Regards
Terry

Beautiful filaprom in your images.
Hope you get the orthogonal issue fixed.

Looking good, Mark, and it appears you’re on the way to solving the issue. I’m guessing severing the USB cable was an accident.

I might be lucky this morning as the forecast is favourable up until 9:00am (then heavy rain later).

Thanks guys!

No such luck for me i'm afraid this morning, when I got up just after 5am there was not a cloud in the sky, by 6am when I would have been out setting up there is a band of cloud to the east only, going from horizon to about 10 degrees altitude, rest of sky is clear... I reckon when I head out for work at 7am the sun will typically clear it. :/

Terry, the wire cut as one end had poked it's way out of the aluminium flight case, and when I closed the lid (not realising was poking out) the scissor action cut it clean in two. Live and learn!

Mark

Oh dear, the wire sounds a nightmare. I'm glad you got it all fixed though as these images are superb (as always :) ).

Lovely captures Mark. Good to see I'm not the only one that needs an assistant to do the processing for me. I'm day's behind too. Managed a day's processing two days ago but that's it. Managed a session this morning. Clouds rolling in again horizon to horizon. Have fun.
