AR2822 mid flare
AR2822 continues to dominate the disk and is putting on a great fireworks show. Luckily the Sun was shining in a vibrant blue sky with average to good seeing this morning, although I could see clouds looming on the horizon and I knew my window of time on the Sun was closing in. No time for FDs, I went straight in with the 150mm/DS Lunt 35 mod and zoomed into the action.
Here's how AR2822 looked at 09:35 UT mid flare. The bright cores were too bright for the camera's dynamic range and burned out white. I don't know when the action started as it was in mid-flow when I joined the party.

Within a little over 30 minutes it was all over and things had settled back down to more or less normal.

I must admit to making a few adjustments in the intervening time as the clouds were beginning to scuttle across the scene, but nothing that would account for the huge range of brightness in the first image.
Within minutes of taking this image the sky had changed completely, looming very dark towards the south and sure enough it's now pouring down!
Thanks for looking.

Re: AR2822 mid flare
Being picky, with the flare image, I would overlay it over the original and blend in the original flare (unprocessed in sharpening). It would bring it back to pure white and remove the bad ringing. It kind of spoils the look in close up. Hopefully you will know what I mean, all in a good way of course (we are best friends so I know you can take it ), I could just see the image being so much better

They are absolutely and literally brilliant captures Stu and I also captured some similar action yesterday too.
2822 has faired very-well for these actions..

Re: AR2822 mid flare
Thanks for the feedback, Alexandra. I've been trying all ways to avoid ringing in PixInsight without luck. I guess the issue originates in ImPPG, but 'clicking' prevent ringing before deconvoluting seems to make no discernible difference. I think I'll have to use GIMP and the airbrush to blend through one image to the other in the flare regions.Montana wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 2:42 pm Being picky, with the flare image, I would overlay it over the original and blend in the original flare (unprocessed in sharpening). Re: AR2822 mid flare
Hello Stu,
wonderful!
CS Jozef
wonderful!
The flare must glow brightly (i.e. burn out), it is too good to portray it so gray.

Re: AR2822 mid flare
Very nice flare capture Stu! I was under clouds today and didn't have a chance at seeing it.

Re: AR2822 mid flare
Stunning shots, Stu.
I second Alexandra’s method of blending in the original capture, without sharpening, around the flare region.
I faced the same problem with my shot of S6852 (now AR12823) catching it in mid-flare on the 9th. This method alleviated the overexposure problem somewhat.
Cheers.
Peter

Re: AR2822 mid flare
Very good Stu! The area was certainly 'burping' at 6.30am, looked very bright. I've not looked at any flare graphs etc but doesn't surprise me it was 'belching' 3 hours later...

Re: AR2822 mid flare
Well done Stu ! I am glad you've got it. I also saw it at about the same time, but clouds spoiled the acquisition.

I've 'cheated' in a different way and simply coloured in the white areas. Not ideal, but it works of a fashion.... I've also reprocessed to try to tease out a little more detail.
