May 16 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is noon to noon-thirty EDT local time ( US ). The skies are mostly cloudy. The seeing is fair. The temperature is 72F. Today's observations were quick views through holes in the clouds. I had no time to look for fine details.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see five plage areas on the solar disc today! AR12822 is in the northwest with another small plage to it's immediate west. AR12823 is in the southeast. The southeast has two plages. A larger faint one and a second smaller one near the limb.

I can see dark filaments in the southeast and southwest near the limb. I also see a thin curved filament in the southeast below the small plage and above the larger dark filament. I can see three prominences on the solar limb. GONG CT shows more proms and a filament in the northeast plus some associated with AR12822. I did not notice these at a glance and clouds did not allow me a closer look.

The mottles were visible.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see only a single spot in AR12822 but surprisingly it has re-structured itself! No light bridges! It is now well formed and structurally symmetrical. It shows both umbra and penumbra. I cannot see it's faculae but I do see another facula west of it.

The only other faculae I can see on the Sun is in the southeast. I see no spots within it.

The fine solar granulation is visible covering the disc today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Brian, I did not image today but I did yesterday. Check out that post!

Terry,
The NE limb is showing signs of activity on the SDO images.

James
