Are here Quark's sodium in use ...

Post by MAURITS »

I ask this question because I like the idea to have one, but I see so less pictures here on this forum.
Maybe it is waste of money when you also the cells can see in WL.

By what I have read a Sodium D line filter is an improvement on white light. In addition to white light features one can also see supergranulation of the lower chromosphere in addition to the normal granulation of the photosphere. The bases of flares ( flare kernels ) can also be seen. Sodium sees the area where the chromosphere touches the photosphere below where CaK and CaH sees. Helium filters see the same region as sodium does, just like CaK and CaH see the same region.

I feel the filter would be worthwhile getting.

Hello,
Here is an interesting set by Christophe Gervier comparing different wavelengths :

I have one, I use it less than my HaT (which is not much!) - It's slowly working it's way onto my 'for sale' list...

I have seen some excellent Sodium captures Maurits, few and far between though.
I have been thinking of getting one, but that's for a later..

I see that some are/maybe available at at reduced price of just £999 in the U.K. hmmm !!

Cheers

There are other filters that could be useful too. Magnesium 1 b2, Hydrogen Beta etc. But I would agree that the most useful data to be obtained is through the three lights we see here. CaK, Continuum and Hydrogen Alpha. I would like to see more on here though with people using those other filters less popular.

And then there is the dream of a coronagraph that can actually see through our atmosphere well enough to see that wonderful corona!

There are some pics on my website with it here https://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.com/search?q=sodium

For whatever reason I just never really seem to use it much. The view is more like 'soft' whitelight granules, similar to if you take a continuum image with an offband ha filter at 656nm, at small apertures <150mm I don't think there is much difference at all to whitelight, and at 540nm contnuum I think the granules look sharper. The shots i've taken with the HaT start to show subtle differences between whitelight, but how often I can use these large apertures is minimal so maybe that is why i've not explored Na more. I have some discussion about it in some of the articles.

Thank you Mark for your link and certainly does show some interesting Sodium captures for any decision making..
Also thanks to James for that link too..

Hi Maurits: I have had the sodium quark for more than two years (maybe 3) and I like it. It is not for every day images, but under certain circumstances I believe it produces very interesting and different views of the sun. It is also easy to use with a refractor, having the 4x+ Barlow built in. I am not planning on selling it in the near future.
